It is no longer news that Bayern Munich defender, David Alaba has turned down the latest proposal offered to him by the club.

The intention of the European champions is clear – to retain the 28-year old Austrian who has been part of the team for the past decade.

The impasse in the deal is reported to be the wages offered by the Bavarian club. Alaba wants to be amongst the highest earners in the club like Manuel Nuer and Robert Lewandowski.

David Alaba has been with Bayern since 2008

Since Bayern is not ready to accede to such a request from the left-back, they withdrew the latest offer. Die Roten still hold on to €11 million as the base wage with €6 million in bonuses.

‘The final decision lies with Alaba’

Meanwhile, the CEO of the Champions League holders, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in an exclusive interview with SPORT BILD that the negotiation for a new deal has been going on for months, adding that the final decision lies with the utility player, having presented their offer.

“I don’t know. We had a meeting two weeks ago with his father George and advisor Pini Zahavi. The conversation was okay, also atmospheric. But one also has to say: We have been going in circles for months.

“And at some point, we have to start planning for the new season, we have to know: Will David stay with FC Bayern or not? Therefore, a decision was important to us at this point.”

Such a statement means that Alaba could still get a deal if he wants as the club is interested in retaining him, instead of losing him on a free transfer in June 2021.

Meanwhile, clubs have been struggling financially due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has affected their finances as games were played without or with few fans allowed into the grounds.

For instance in Germany, only 20 percent of the home fans are allowed into the stands. In such a situation, clubs won’t be able to make a lot of money and that is believed to have been factored into the new deal presented to Alaba.

“Especially in times of Corona, the players have to develop an understanding for the clubs. We’ve lost a lot of money, we haven’t had a spectator in the stadium for eight months.

“We are threatened with a loss in the three-digit million range. I believe that the players are well-advised to stay at a club if they feel comfortable there and, as in the case of David, are celebrating great successes. I think we all think the same here at the club: We all want David to stay. He’s a wonderful person and a top player.”

David Alaba might leave Bayern Munich for either Real Madrid or Barcelona over salary

Although he has been criticized by some former Bayern players over his insistence on the wages, Alaba won’t be too expensive for Real and Barcelona.

However, the latter might be off the deal as they are currently owing up to 700m Euros in wage. However, some adjustments might be done to bring him in, since he is coming on a free transfer.

The German media reported that Spain is Alaba’s dream destination should he leave Bavaria at the end of the season.

Although both Real Madrid and Barcelona are short of money, the Galacticos can still afford to add him to their wage bill. As it stands, the door is now open for Alaba To make a decision for himself.

AS reported that Madrid is interested in him as Zinedine Zidane has sanctioned the move.

So, this could be seen as a waiting game for the player to run down his contract, knowing fully well that Bayern won’t offer him what he wants financially.

He will be a good addition to the backline of Madrid no doubt. His representative might meet with the La Liga champions in January provided there is no further development surrounding his future at the Allianz Arena.

Madrid won’t want to miss the opportunity of having such utility in their squad.
