German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich will face Mexican club Tigres in the final of the prestigious FIFA Club World Cup on 11 February 2021 in Qatar.

Bayern Munich defeated an Egyptian club, Al Ahly 2-0 in the semi-final stage of the competition on Monday to stage a meeting between them and the Mexican club.

Bayern’s talisman Robert Lewandowski scored the two goals which were enough for him to have the opportunity of playing in the final of FIFA Club World Cup for the first time in his football career.

On the other hand, Tigres made the final of the FIFA Club World Cup for the first time in the history of the club after defeating Brazilian Palmeiras that were favorites to scale through the semi-final stage of the competition.

All the Mexican side needed to win over Palmeiras was a spot-kick which was taken by Andre-Pierre Gignac. The lone goal of the 35-year-old French striker allowed the Mexican club to become the first Mexican side to play in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup.

As it stands, Andre-Pierre Gignac has scored three goals in the competition which makes him the highest goalscorer of the 2020 edition of the competition ahead of Lewandowski (two goals).

The golden boot war between Gignac and Lewandowski will be decided when the Concacaf champions and the UEFA Champions League champions meet on February 11.

Why 2020 FIFA Club World is being played in February 2021

Robert Lewandowski won the man of the match award after Bayern Munich match against Al Ahly on Monday.

The Ongoing FIFA Club World Cup ought to have been played in December 2020 but the coronavirus pandemic and other related factors forced FIFA to postpone it until February 2021.

Recall that before December 2020, AFC, CONMEBOL, and CONCACAF were yet to decide the winners of their continental club competitions. Hence, FIFA had to wait until the three Confederations produce the champions of their continental championships.

On 17 November 2020, FIFA announced that the 17th edition of the competition would be played between 1 and 11 February 2021 instead of in December 2020.

If Bayern Munich win the title on February 11, they will become the second team in the history of club football to win six club titles within the same football calendar. The first club to achieve such a feat was Barcelona at the end of the 2009-2010 season under coach Pep Guardiola.

Premier League reigning champions, Liverpool, are the current champions of the Club World Cup. They won the title in 2019 but could not participate in the 17th edition because their journey in the 2019-2020 UEFA Champions League campaign was cut short in the round of 16.
