Bayern Munich have announced that they will not bring back Jerome Boateng to the team, despite the defender’s influence during the training sessions with the German club side.
It was reported earlier this week that the Bundesliga champions were in advanced discussion to re-sign the former Germany International defender as a free agent after the end of his deal with Lyon.
Thomas Tuchel’s side were willing to add the 35-year-old defender to the squad following an injury hitting the team center back.
However, on Friday, the 6th of October, the current Bundesliga champion took to their social media page to declare that the club had ruled out Boateng’s return.
What happened?
The German powerhouse led by Thomas Tuchel came under heavy objection during the week for thinking about bringing the former Lyon defender back due to the player’s involvement in a court case for domestic violence.
The club supporters were even threatened with Bayern’s game against Freiburg on Sunday, 8th of October if the club did not break relations with the German international by Saturday.
AFP reported last month that Boateng withstands a new prosecution about a 2021 conviction of domestic abuse against his former spouse, (the mother of his two daughters) during a Caribbean vacation in 2018.
Boateng was fined 1.8 million euros for acts of socializing back in 2018 but saw his fine lessened on inducement to 1.2 million euros.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, 4th of October, Bavaria’s highest court cast out the proceeding and authorized a new trial founded on the same evidence against the player.
What Bayern Munich said about their U-turn to re-signing Jerome Boateng
The German giant said in a statement on Friday that the center back would not be giving a new contract.
The club statement said; “The situation has eased, centre-backs Dayot Upamecano and Min-Jae Kim can now play without pain again, and Matthijs de Ligt is also on the mend.
“Considering all factors, Bayern have decided against re-hiring Jerome Boateng”.
Boateng, the 35-year-old Berlin native spent 10 years at Bayern Munich. He represented the team in 363 matches, winning nine German Bundesliga titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2014 and 2020, he was also part of the German team that won the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Bayern Munich head coach, Thomas Tuchel said on Friday that his team has encountered an emergency circumstance in center-back but admitted that the decision to back out of re-signing Boateng does not have sporting factors.
In addition, as the club’s outstanding former player, he has been allowed to continue to maintain his physical well-being at the club, and he has expressed himself in good physical quality.
What’s next for Bayern Munich?
As reported above, the club had ruled out Boateng’s return, and the team manager Thomas Tuchel will be looking forward to welcoming injured Dayot Upamecano and Min-Jae Kim back into the squad in preparation for their next Bundesliga game against SC Freiburg on Sunday, 8th of October.
