If not for the intervention of VAR, Bayern Leverkusen attacker Amine Adli would have been wrongly red carded for two bookable offences in their last encounter against Bayern Munich.

Amine Adli was brought down in the 18-yard box on two occasions by defenders of the Bundesliga heavyweights but referee Tobias Stieler thought otherwise and he reached for his pockets to brandish a yellow card against the attacker.

The decision led to Amine being in resentment over the judgement of Tobias Stieler on what transpired during the course of the 2-1 victory for Leverkusen at the Bay Arena.

He was angry on both occasions with the shocking call that the referee had made, having been accused and booked for diving in the penalty box.

VAR overturned both decisions by the referee in favor of Bayern Leverkusen and the yellow card to Amine Adli rescinded

Anyway, both decisions were overturned with the referee handing a penalty to the home side after he consulted VAR on both occasions.

Amine Adli became comfortable after he was vindicated by the officials in the VAR studio and he alongside Tobias Stieler saw the humorous part of what occured.

Exequel Palacios stepped up and clinically converted both penalties for Bayern Leverkusen as they raced back into the game overcoming a first half strike from Joshua Kimmich to defeat the team from Munich.

Based on that win, Leverkusen climbed up to 8th position on the Bundesliga table and they are only 9 points behind a spot in the UEFA Champions League.

It’s understandable to think that Amine Adli was not the only individual whose nerves became calm due to the intervention of VAR as the center referee also expressed calm with the decision by the VAR referees.

In an interview with DAZN after the clash, Tobias Stieler stated that the decision made by VAR was a life-saving call.

Tobias said: “He was my lifesaver and also the lifesaver for the game”, when he was questioned on the two VAR judgements, he said: “In the end, both teams were happy because the right decision was made.”

“The only thing left to do is take it with humour, we hugged each other during the game and also after the game. Now he promised me the shirt.”

Xabi Alonso’s comments after the match against Bayern Munich

The manager of Bayern Leverkusen, Xavi Alonso, was also happy with his club’s amazing performance against Bayern Munich.

Alonso said: “The performance and the win are incredible, Bayern are one of the best teams in Europe at the moment”

“We expected an intense game and we played with intensity and were good with the ball. I agree with Nagelsmann, it was a deserved win for us and very important.”

Amine Adli joined the German side from Toulouse in France in 2021 putting pen-to-paper on a 5-year-deal worth £15 million.

He was the most fouled player on Sunday as he was fouled on four different occasions. Adli has scored 8 goals in 59 appearances for the team.
