Barcelona Target Memphis Depay Fuels Transfer Speculations after Netting Hattrick in Ligue 1 Opener

    Olympique Lyon ace, Memphis Depay, has fueled speculation over a potential summer move in an interview after a scoring a hattrick in the French Ligue 1 opener. Barcelona Target Memphis Depay may be on his way to Barcelona t help out since Messi is leaving.

    Following Les Gones 4-1 victory over Dijon on Friday night, Depay, who is reportedly a target of Spanish giants Barcelona, fueled rumors of an exit, stating that he doesn’t know if he “will do the full season at Lyon.”

    Newly appointed Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman is reportedly keen on bringing his Depay to the Camp Nou, as he plans a squad clear-out and overhaul.

    The 26-year-old, who might be tempted by the chance of playing under his former national team head coach, has admitted that playing the UEFA Champions League is Important to him at this stage of his career.

    Following a disappointing spell in the Premier League with Manchester United, Depay moved to the Groupama Stadium in 2017.

    Since then, he has rekindled the spark that once touted him as one of the best forwards across Europe, scoring 57 goals in 139 outings for the French outfit.

    On Friday, the Netherlands international scrounged a hattrick in Lyon’s first game of the season as the X strolled to a 4-1 victory over Dijon.

    Lyon was impressive last season. Despite a disappointing seventh-place finish in the league, ultimately costing them a place in any European competition, they managed to reach the Champions League semi-finals by knocking out Juventus and Manchester City.

    For the first time in 24 years, Lyon has failed to qualify for either the Champions League or the Europa League and Depay has admitted that playing Europe’s elite competition is via=tal for him at this stage of his career.

    When asked about his future in an interview following his he win against Dijon, Depay said: “I do not see the future, I do not know if I will do the full season here. I have been here for four years, I became captain.
    “After you have to look at your career, there is no Champions League. At the moment I don’t know.”

    Speaking on his hattrick and Lyon’s performance, he added: “I’m really happy to have scored three goals today.
    “It wasn’t the best game I’ve played but we start the season with three points, and that’s the most important thing.

    “We have shown we can fight against the big teams, but we have to stay focused and win against the so-called ‘smaller’ teams. We have a lot of good players. We have to give our best to aim for the top.”
