Barcelona fans booed the club’s midfielder, Frenkie De Jong as he drove to the club’s training ground, amid his wage dispute with the club’s board.
Amid an odd transfer story, a viral video depicted De Jong being targeted because of a contract he signed with Barcelona in 2019, before the team was drowned in debt because of the Covid-19 outbreak. In Spanish, the 25-year-old was insulted and told: “Lower your salary, b*tch!”
Even though Barcelona made a clear financial commitment to the midfielder when they signed him, some fans appear to have concluded from recent rumors that the club needs the midfielder to either go or accept a wage cut to attract other players.
De Jong has not yet made a clear public declaration of his intentions, but despite the complicated situation at Camp Nou, it has been generally believed that he is reticent to leave Barcelona.
What is happening with De Jong in Barcelona?
According to reports, threats of legal action and allegations of extortion are involved in the most recent Barcelona-Frenkie de Jong story chapter.
Barcelona has informed de Jong that the terms of his current contract may contain illegal activity and may give rise to legal proceedings, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
De Jong has found himself in the center of Barça’s predicament as the club is currently at odds with the league over its financial situation as it rushes to recruit summer additions ahead of the start of the La Liga season this weekend.
The Dutch midfielder is reportedly owed €18 million ($18.4 million) after signing a two-year contract extension in October 2020 since a portion of his wage from the 2020–21 and 2021–22 soccer seasons was postponed.
Barcelona reportedly asserted in a letter to de Jong that it had discovered proof that the individuals who signed that transaction, which had been approved by the club’s former board and president, had engaged in criminal activity.
The letter allegedly goes on to advise that the two parties cancel the extension’s terms and carry on with the terms of the initial deal de Jong signed in 2019 after joining in a €75 million transfer from Ajax.
According to the report, the former board members are unconcerned about the validity of the contract extension, in contrast to the Dutch players’ union president, who suggested that de Jong might be a victim of extortion.
Meanwhile, according to reports, Barcelona has accepted a €65 million bid from Manchester United for the 25-year-old, clearing the way in part for the club to officially sign Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Andreas Christensen, Franck Kessié, and Jules Koundé as well as other recent additions.
Before Sunday’s Joan Gamper Trophy friendly against Mexico’s Pumas UNAM, club president Joan Laporta assured supporters that the club “will be able to register all players.”
