Barcelona have reached an agreement with Palmeiras for the signing of midfielder Matheus Siqueira Fernandes at the end of the season. The Brazilian has agreed to a five-year contract which will keep him at Nou Camp until the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
Fernandes, who now has a €300m release clause in his deal, would join his new team on 1 July 2020 for a fee of €7m, which will rise to €10m in add-ons. He becomes the second player that will join the La Liga champions next summer after the club signed Francisco Trincao from Portuguese side SC Braga on Friday.
The club took to their official website to announce the deal on Friday. Quique Setién’s side have started the rebuilding process and buying players for the future. The Catalans are said to have courted the Brazilian for the majority of the January transfer window. He is seen as a long-term replacement for the club’s defensive midfielder Sergio Busquets and set to pair Frenkie de Jong in the midfield in the nearest future.
The midfielder started his career in the youth teams at Botafogo and made his first team debut in 2016 for the Brazilian club. In two years with the team he made 76 appearances, scoring twice and providing four assists in which time he also claimed the Carioca championship with Botafogo.
In 2019 he made the move to Palmeiras where he has played 11 matches, scoring once. Matheus Fernandes made two appearances for the Brazil U17 team and two for the U20 side also.
Fernandes’ signing is coming few hours after Barcelona signed Portuguese striker Francisco Trincao from SC Braga on a five-year deal until the end of the 2024/25 season. The Spanish club has agreed to sign the forward for £26.1million (€31m) with a buy-out clause of €500m (£420m). The Barcelona future striker will move to Nou Camp in the summer (July 1).
Trincao started his career with Vianense and FC Porto youth teams before moving to SC Braga. On 28 December 2018, he made his first team debut for the Portuguese club against Vitoria FC in a league cup match. Since his debut, Trincao has made 29 appearances for the first team, scoring three goals.
In the current season, he has established himself as a key part of the team, scoring three goals and providing six assists in 21 matches for Braga who sit fifth in the Primeira Liga table. The Portugal Under 21 was part of the side that won the Under-19 European Championships in 2018.
Trincao can play as a striker or a supporting striker. He can also play at the wing, on either flank despite being left-footed which has done with Braga this season. The striker is quick and technically gifted with a vision that means he is a great creator of goals as well. The new Barça player also has the ability to take defenders on with his dribbling skills.
