Man Utd to free Ashley Young at the end of season

After a nine-year spell at Old Trafford, Manchester United skipper Ashely Young would leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old’s contract will finish at the end of the campaign and the club is reluctant to give the club captain a short term deal like they did last season because of his invaluable experience, according to the Evening Standard

Former Aston Villa and Watford winger signed for United in 2011 under Sir Alex Ferguson. Young has won one FA Community Shield, one Premier League title in 2013, one FA Cup, one EFL Cup and one Europa League in 2017.

The club captain would be free to speak to European clubs from January and also sign a pre-agreement deal with clubs interested in him.

Young has also lost his place in the United team in recent weeks. With the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who arrived from Crystal Palace for £50million in the summer and has established himself as the first-choice right-back, Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams at the left-back in good form, it is difficult for the captain to get a first-team shirt.

Now has Young even dropped down the pecking order at the club. The England international is even behind Diego Dalot and Marcos Rojo when the pair returns from injury.

This season Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has set up his team to play counter-attacking football with the fast pace of the likes of Daniel James, Marcos Rashford and Anthony Martial. The coach has also focused and brought in young players with potential from the academy.

Also, Solskjaer is planning to recruit at least three players over the next two windows to play his style of football. This means that some old players will leave in the summer, following a host of high profile departures over the past year.

Speaking about his plans to sign new players in the summer, the United manager said: ‘We’re looking to strengthen in many positions.

‘If you look at our squad compared to others we’re getting there, but need two or three players to have a squad with enough numbers to rotate throughout a long season and we’ll see what we sign.’
