Arsenal football club has been doing what can be said to be a bad business in the transfer market between 2019-2020 and the 2021-2022 season. The Premier League club have spent a whopping £199.8 million to bring in players they allowed to leave the club for free in the last two seasons.
In the last three transfer windows, Arsenal have not been able to make money from the exit of players. Contrary to what Arsenal used to be known for, the club now spends a lot in the transfer market without getting the financial rewards in return.
Below are the players Arsenal have spent £199.8 million on without getting anything in return:
- Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang exited Arsenal on January 31, 2022, for FC Barcelona. Arsenal did not gain a dim from the transfer transaction despite spending £57.4 million to bring him to the club.
In fact, there were reports that Arsenal had to pay the 32-year-old Gabonese striker £7 million to leave the club on a free transfer because there were 18 months left on his contract with the Premier League.
- Sead Kolasinac
In the case of Sead Kolasinac, the 28-year-old Bosnia-Herzegovina left-back joined Arsenal on July 1, 2017, from Schalke 04 on a free transfer. After over four years at the club, he left the Premier League side for Marseille on a free transfer on January 18, 2022.
- Mesut Özil
Mesut Özil joined Arsenal on September 2, 2013, from Real Madrid. The Premier League side paid Real Madrid £42.3 million to bring the 33-year-old German midfielder to the club.
After over seven beautiful years at the Emirates Stadium, things turned sour for Özil, and had to be forced out of the club. After a series of back and forth, he joined Fenerbahce on January 25, 2021, on a free transfer.
- Willian
Willian left Chelsea for Arsenal on August 14, 2020, on a free transfer. The 33-year-old Brazilian winger did not last for more than a season before the Premier League side discarded him.
The Brazil international left the Emirates Stadium for a Brazilian side Corinthians on August 30, 2021, on a free transfer.
- Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Henrikh Mkhitaryan joined Arsenal from Manchester United on January 22, 2018, for a transfer fee worth £30.6M. After about two seasons at the club, Arsenal allowed him to join Roma on September 1, 2020, on a free transfer.
- Shkodran Mustafi
Shkodran Mustafi joined Arsenal from Valencia on August 30, 2016, for a transfer fee worth €41 million. The 29-year-old German defender stayed at Arsenal for about five years before the Premier League side decided to let him go for free. He joined FC Schalke 04 from the Premier League side on a free transfer on February 1, 2021. He is currently playing for Levante.
- Sokratis Papastathopoulos
Sokratis Papastathopoulos joined Arsenal on July 2, 2018, from Borussia Dortmund for a transfer fee worth €16 million. The 33-year-old Greek defender spent over two seasons at the Premier League club before he joined Olympiacos on a free transfer on January 25, 2021.
- David Luiz
David Luiz joined Arsenal from Chelsea on August 8, 2019, for a transfer fee worth €8.70 million. He spent about three years at the Premier League side before his contract expired.
The 34-year-old Brazilian defender stayed without a club for two months before he joined Flamengo on a free transfer.
- Calum Chambers
Calum Chambers joined Arsenal from Southampton on July 28, 2014, on a transfer fee worth €20.23 million. Unfortunately, the 27-year-old English defender could not establish himself at the Emirates Stadium for close to five years.
On January 27, 2022, Arsenal allowed the English defender to leave the club for Aston Villa on a free transfer.
