The 2022/2023 Premier League season opener finally got underway on Friday night, August 5, 2022, under the lights at Selhurst Park. Here is a summarized analysis of the Crystal Palace Vs Arsenal season opener.

    1st Half review

Arsenal looked a bit sharper and more dominant in the opening exchanges of the first half and should have gone ahead three minutes into the game after a brilliant maneuver by Gabriel Jesus into the Palace box, the ball ended up at Martinelli’s feet but he fired just wide.

The home side, however, looked out of place, barely had a touch of the ball, and weren’t as adept once they got the ball.

A beautifully worked corner routine afforded Gabriel Martinelli the chance to redeem himself via a Zinchecnko-assisted headed pass to give Arsenal a well-deserved first-half lead.

Gabriel Martinelli now becomes the first Brazilian to get the opening goal of a Premier League season. Asides from a few shaky moments from Arsenal’s new no1, the Gunners didn’t have much to worry about.

Edouard’s header that was well saved by Ramsdale indicated improvements towards the end of the half. Coach Patrick Vieira of Crystal Palace will be looking to further galvanize his side to keep the momentum of the latter parts of the first half ahead of the start of the second stanza. Meanwhile, Arsenal will be dissatisfied that it’s just 1-0 after the first 45 minutes.

The stats say it all. Crystal Palace were expected to get on the ball in the second half to give their guest more to think about tonight but that was not to be.

    Full Time Analysis

Crystal Palace started the second half well and should have levelled the score after Eze’s 1v1 in the 51st minute. A bit more back and forth from both sides made for an end to end game and Palace gained in confidence as the minutes ticked off whilst Arsenal offered very little in their opponents half.

A few penalty incidents made for a nervy final 15 minutes for the Gunners until a Guehi own goal settled the nerves of Mikel Arteta’s side. In the end, Palace didn’t do enough to trouble Arsenal’s goal and The Gunners took their chances. Game, set, match; it ended 0-2 at Selhurst Park in favor of Arsenal.

    The Premier League is back.
