The manager of Tottenham Hotspur, Antonio Conte said he desires the club’s talisman, Harry Kane, to extend his contract with the club. He however added that his priority is to keep the England international happy at Spurs.

Harry Kane is a product of Tottenham Hotspur’s youth system. He has been playing for Tottenham’s senior team since January 1, 2011. Since then, he has left the club on three occasions on loan to Leyton Orient in 2011, Millwall in 2012, and Norwich in 2012.

After those periods, Kane has remained loyal to Tottenham Hotspur despite how prolific he has been and the amount of attention his goalscoring skill has generated.

The Tottenham Hotspur and England national team captain has attracted the attention of top European clubs over the years but he remained true to Spurs even though he is yet to win a major title with the club despite the number of goals he has scored for them.

However, ahead of the 2021-2022 season, Kane tried to force his way out of the club when it was obvious that he might not win a major title with Spurs despite the number of times he has finished the season as Premier League top scorer.

In the summer of 2021, Manchester City desperately tried to buy Harry Kane to the extent they made a £100 million offer for his signature but Tottenham refused to sell. Kane pushed for the move to the extent that he missed the club’s preseason and even some days in the first week of the new season. After a series of back and forth, he pledged his allegiance to Tottenham.

When Antonio Conte became the manager of the club after the club sacked Nuno Espirito Santo in early November, Kane became more involved in the team and that helped Spurs to break into the top four.

Since Spurs returned to Champions League football in the 2022-2023 season, there has not been any serious transfer speculation involving Harry Kane. The England international seems as happy as he should be at the club and his belief in coach Antonio Conte has made his love for Spurs even stronger.

So far in the 2022-2023 season, Harry Kane has scored four Premier League goals in four league appearances. His effort has helped Spurs to occupy the 3rd spot with 10 points in four games, two points below first-placed Arsenal.

The fact that Tottenham Hotspur has garnered 10 points in a possible 12 points is a sign that the club is in business to contest for the league title and also for other major titles which are what Kane has always wanted.

However, the bad news is that Kane’s current contract with Spurs will expire on June 30, 2024, and there is no sign that the 29-year-old is ready to extend his stay at the club that barely wins titles.

On the contrary, coach Antonio Conte said ahead of Spurs’ league game against West Ham United on August 31 that Spurs’ current performance has presented an opportunity for the club to push Kane to sign a contract extension.

“You know very well that you create the perfect time (for a contract extension) with a project,” Antonio Conte said. “If also the player understands that there is a right process, that everybody is going in the same direction, I think every single player wants to see this.

“I think that Harry for sure is happy because he is seeing this type of situation. There is a vision, there is a direction and there is a unity to try to improve the team and also to improve the team at the level of his expectations.”

Even though coach Conte wants Kane to extend his contract with Tottenham Hotspur, what is more, important for the Italian coach is to see the 29-year-old England international get more involved in Spurs’ effort in this season’s campaign.

“My opinion is only one of a million opinions,” Conte said. “We are talking about a world-class striker and a player who at this moment is the most representative player for Tottenham. For sure I would like him to sign a new contract.

“But at this moment, for me, it is very important to see him happy, totally involved with this season, totally involved with this project and in what we are doing. For me, this is the most important.

“Then it’s a decision that the player and the club have to take.”

Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur will take a short trip to London Stadium to take on West Ham United on Wednesday, August 31. The game will kick off at 19:45.
