Andre Onana has broken his silence on why he screamed at Harry Magure in a preseason friendly against Borussia Dortmund.
The Cameroonian shotstopper made his debut for Manchester United in a crunch preseason friendly against Real Madrid.
The game ended in a defeat. An early goal by Real Madrid’s new talisman Jude Bellingham and a late bicycle volley by Joselu sealed a 2-0 win for the La Liga giants.
Onana’s stole the spotlight on his debut. He perfectly blend into Erik Ten Hag’s style, aiding press from the back for an efficient attack, joining and triggering counter attacks with precise long balls, good passing accuracy, confidence with the ball and other breathtaking stops and blocks that kept the score margin respectable.
Against Borussia Dortmund, it was still a stellar performance for the former Inter Milan goalie but it was not all glossy in Manchester United final third between him and former Man United captain Harry Maguire.
Onana howled at Harry Maguire at a point in the game against Borussia Dortmund after his reckless defending nearly saw the Bundesliga side land a punch.
Maguire left Sebastian Haller unmarked, allowing the Borussia Dortmund forward stride forward and make his way through the final third into the box.
Haller then came one-on-one with the Cameroonian and nearly scored but failed to beat the highly-rated goalie.
After producing a stunning save to deny Haller, Onana went up to Maguire and screamed at him for his reckless defending.
While such reactions are typical of all goalkeepers, Andre Onana has clarified why he shouted at Onana. Speaking to MUTV, the 27-year-old said he shouted at Maguire because he demands a lot from all players and tries to talk to them.
“I try to talk to them a lot because I know he’s a good player, he is one of the captains of the team. That’s big and he is good with the ball, so I would demand [from] him a lot and he’s a good, great guy. I have a good relationship with him. I have to be and he has to be ready and I spoke with him because when I’m in the goal, I demand to everyone a lot.
Harry Maguire have a torrid 2022/23 season with Manchester United since Erik Ten Hag emerged as new manager.
He has lost his starting berth at the club, making just 16 Premier League appearances for the club with 8 starts. Maguire was recently stripped of his role as Manchester United captain with Bruno Fernandes emerging as the new captain.
Ten Hag is ready to sell Harry Magure this summer and has slammed a £50m price tag on the player.
£20m bid from West Ham United have been rejected with improved offers expected.
Despite his Manchester United travails, Onana admitted his utmost respect for the player as ex-captain although he called him out against Borussia Dortmund. The Cameroonian is willing to settle with his new teammates but has admitted he will demand a lot from the players.
