It is a sad tale for Serie A clubs in European club competitions this year as they could only dream of European trophies but could not realize them.

Roma, Fiorentina, and Inter Milan all fought their way to the finals of the three tiers of European club competitions this year but could not win the trophy.

Roma Lost Europa League Final to Sevilla

In a tightly-contested 2022/23 Europa League final in Prague, Jose Mourinho’s magic wand in European club competition finals failed to play out.

The Portuguese has not lost a European final since he won the trophy with Portugal Primeira side, Sporting Lisbon in 2004.

Jose Mourinho is the first manager to win the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League with three different clubs.

He also has two Champions League trophies with Sporting Lisbon in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010.

After winning the Europa Conference League title with Roma last season, he was denied his fifth European club trophy by record winners, Sevilla.

Roma were the first Italian club to lost their European final this year as they lost via shootout to Sevilla after settling for a 1-1 draw.

Fiorentina lost Europa Conference League Final to West Ham United

Another Serie A club, Fiorentina, were aiming for their first European crown in decades.

Fiorentina set up a Europa Conference League final clash against West Ham after scoring a last-gasp goal against Swiss side Basel.

Against West Ham, the Serie A giants stumbled as Jarrod Bowen’s stoppage-time strike sealed a win for the Premier League side and deny the Serie A side their first European trophy in years.

Inter Milan’s dream of smashing the Champions League after 13 years was in ruins at the Ataturk Olympic stadium in Istanbul.

Going against a high-flying Premier League giants Manchester City, the Nerazzuri struggled to register their presence in the game from the start.

Throughout the first half, they recorded no attempt on target but were able to hold off the pressure from City. After the hour mark, they finally conceded as Rodri hit the winner to deny the Serie A side the coveted Champions League trophy.

Recently, English and Spanish teams have dominated European competitions with Italian teams, who are among the top five leagues in Europe, seeming to lose out.

However, the Serie A is still one of the top three leagues in Europe with more clubs that can compete at the European stage.

Reaching the final of all the three tiers of European club competitions is also a great feat and an index of the strength of the league.
