Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, after testing negative for Covid-19, returned to training with the Gabon Team before Friday’s Africa Cup of Nations match against Ghana.
The 32-year-old, who is out of favor at Arsenal and was stripped of his captaincy last month, and Mario Lemina, who tested positive last week, were both absent from Gabon’s 1-0 win over Comoros on Monday.
Coach Patrice Neveu, on the other hand, is being isolated after testing positive, according to the Gabonese football federation.
Gabon’s preparations for the biennial continental showpiece competition have been rocky.
The Gabonese had to settle a dispute between the players and the federation over match bonuses, while the Confederation of African Football (CAF) chastised them for changing hotels in Yaounde in violation of the rules.
What happened to Aubameyang?
Soon after coming in Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations, Aubameyang tested positive for COVID-19.
The players went on protest before flying from Dubai to Yaounde, where they would play in Group C alongside Morocco, Ghana, and the Comoros, demanding unpaid allowances and bonuses by the Gabonese FA.
Apart from Aubameyang, the illness is likely to have infected Mario Lemina, a former Southampton and Fulham player. The two were pictured partying in Dubai before heading to Cameroon.
Aubameyang and his international teammate Mario Lemina were both seen in a video that has been circulating on social media and is reported to be from Gabon’s vacation to Dubai.
Aubameyang’s Arsenal Saga
After committing a disciplinary breach, Arsenal football club stated that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will no longer be the club’s captain.
The Gabonese striker, who is 32 years old, will not play in the Premier League match between Arsenal and West Ham United on December 15, 2021.
Remember that on December 6, the footballer came on as a late-minute replacement in Arsenal’s league match against Everton. Everton won the game by a score of 2-1.
On December 11, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was left out of the squad that faced Southampton. Arsenal defeated Southampton 3-0 while he was away.
Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also posted some pictures on his social media page to signify his return to training. This is a massive boost for Team Gabon as Black Stars of Ghana are not easy to win.
Gabon in AFCON 2021
Gabon has returned to the continental level after missing the 2019 tournament in Egypt, and its best successes were quarter-final appearances in the 1996 and 2012 tournaments.
According to Mansour Loum of Sport News Africa, both Aubameyang and Lemina tested positive for Covid after arriving in Cameroon.
