The head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Augustine Eguavoen has stressed that the country still needs the services of Victor Moses.
Victor Moses is currently contracted to Russia’s club, Spartak Moscow. He decided to retire from international football in 2018 to focus on his club career. Some reports claimed that Victor Moses had to bow out of the national team because of the criticism some fans of the national team often subject him to.
Despite retiring from international football to focus on his club career, he was not able to establish himself at Chelsea. Hence, Victor Moses who joined Chelsea on August 24, 2012, from Wigan for a transfer fee worth €11.50 million, went on loan to Fenerbahce, Inter Milan, and Spartak Moscow between 2018 and 2021.
The Nigerian right midfielder who is sometimes used as a right-winger was able to secure a permanent deal with Spartak Moscow on July 1, 2021, after the Russian club paid Chelsea €5 million.
His contract with the Russian club is expected to expire on June 30, 2024. But the war between Russia and Ukraine could force him out of the club in the coming weeks.
Recall that FIFA has announced that the contract of the foreign footballers playing for clubs in Russia and Ukraine has been suspended due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But the foreign players in Russia would have to reach an agreement with their clubs before they can join another club for the rest of the 2021-2022 season.
As that is going on, the coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Augustine Eguavoen is trying to lure Victor Moses back to the Super Eagles ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Though the Super Eagles would play a 2-legged play-off with Ghana before they can qualify for the World Cup, Eguavoen is already thinking of adding experienced players to his team for the tournament.
Recall that coach Eguavoen and his team convinced Odion Ighalo to return from retirement after over two years away from the squad. Moses is now the coach’s target.
Reports claimed that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick and former coach Gernot Rohr tried to convince Moses to return to the squad but failed. Eguavoen who claimed to have spoken with the 31-year-old winger said Moses is one of the best players that should join his squad.
“We want the best for the country”, coach Eguavoen said according to the BBC.
“Victor Moses is somebody I adore and I’m looking at ways of trying to get him in and we’ve spoken.
“He’s not part of these games [World Cup play-off against Ghana] but hopefully as time goes on because we want the best for the team.
“Whether we like it or not, Victor Moses will still bring some value. But right now he is playing in Russia, we all know the problems with Ukraine and Russia. I am happy to say that my conversation with him is settled.”
Victor Moses’ contract with Spartak Moscow and his stats in the 2021-2022 season?
Victor Moses first joined Spartak Moscow on loan on October 15, 2020, after the Russian club paid Chelsea €300,000 loan fee.
After impressing the club for a season, Spartak Moscow decided to offer Moses a permanent deal. The Russian club paid Chelsea €5 million on July 1, 2021, to acquire the Nigerian player permanently.
Reports claimed that Moses who have a net worth of £24 million, is earning a yearly take-home worth £3,900,000 in Russia. His contract with Spartak Moscow is expected to expire on June 30, 2024.
