The newly appointed manager of Newcastle United, Eddie Howe said he could not promise that he would save the club from relegation.

He however said he is confident that Newcastle United could escape relegation, adding that he is impressed with the vision of the club’s new owners (a Saudi Arabia-backed consortium).

Recall that Eddie Howe, former Bournemouth, and Burnley coach was appointed the head coach of Newcastle United this month weeks after Steve Bruce was sacked.

Though the club appointed Howe with the hope that he could build the club to become title contenders, the coach’s primary assignment is to prevent the club from being relegated.

Newcastle United are currently sitting on the 19th spot on the league table with 5 points in 11 games. They are the only side that are yet to win a Premier League game this season.

Despite that, Newcastle United are 5 points away from safety which means that they still stand a fighting chance.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Eddie Howe revealed that he has spoken with the new owners of the club but noted that he has not fully digested their vision for the club.

He said: “We have had some really good conversations and I have been really impressed with their vision for the club, but to be honest I haven’t delved into it too much.

“It is all about the short term and the position of the team. Obviously, we need to try and address that very quickly and move up the league and avoid relegation.

“I’m absolutely confident we can, but I make no promises on that. All I can do is lead the club to the best of my abilities. I will give 100 percent every single day to try and bring success to Newcastle.”

Newcastle United offered Eddie Howe a deal that will expire on June 30, 2024. Recall that the English tactician became jobless for over 14 months after he left relegated Bournemouth at the end of the 2019-2020 season.

Despite his long absence from football management, he is expected to build Newcastle United with the millions of pounds the new owners would release to him during transfer windows starting from January 2022.

The new owners of the club are said to be worth £320 billion which means that Howe might never be starved of funds throughout his time at the club.

“It feels fantastic to be the head coach of Newcastle, I’m absolutely honored and privileged,” Howe said.

“It’s an incredible moment in my life, and judging by the reaction I’ve had and how the two days of training have gone, it’s been a really positive start.

“I’d like to thank everyone who supported me, and the board here for trusting in me in this important job.”

During the over 14 months Eddie Howe stayed without a coaching job, a couple of clubs showed interest in him. The most notable club that came for him during that period was Scottish side Celtic. But negotiations broke down halfway.

But when Newcastle United came calling, Howe said everything felt right for him and had to grab the opportunity of working with the Premier League side.

“The pull of the club is huge,” he added. “The size of the club, the history of the club, the new ambitious plans, the new owners when meeting them, knowing some of the players – I just thought it was a perfect fit for me.

“Yes, I had lots of other options, but I wanted to take my time and really utilize my time away from the game.

“I feel refreshed, energized, and ready to start work.”
