One of the professional clubs competing to win the Italian league called Scudetto is Bologna Football Club 1909. The club also popularly referred to as Bologna is based in Bologna, Emilia-Romagna.

The club is owned by Saputo Inc., a Montreal-based Canadian dairy company and its chairman is Joey Saputo. Bologna is coached bySiniša Mihajlović, a Serbian manager. Due to the red-and-blue striped shirts which Bologna players wear, the club is nicknamed I Rossoblù (The Red and Blues) and I Veltri (The Greyhounds). Red and Blue are also the official colors of the city.

Bologna was founded on 7 September 1893 and was one of the founding members of Serie A in 1929. With over 125 years of active football, the club is the fourth oldest football Italian club. The club is the sixth most successful team in the history of the league after winning the Italian league championship seven times.

The club plays its home games at Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, which they share with local rivals Sampdoria. It has a capacity of 38,279 and was built in 1929. The stadium is named after the former president of the club for thirty years, Renato Dall’Ara. Bologna has played in 73 Serie A championships out of 88. The club occupies the ninth spot in the ranking of the highest number of appearances of the formations in the highest Italian category.

Consortium Bologna 2010 led by banker Giovanni Consorte and coffee businessman Massimo Zanetti bought the club from Sergio Porcedda on 23 December 2010. This was after Porcedda failed to pay players an coaches’ wages during his short-tenured ownership and put Bologna in threat of bankruptcy. The company also owed agent fee to Leonardo Corsi in Andrea Raggi’s transfer.

On 21 January 2011, Zanetti and CEO Luca Baraldi resigned after only 28 days due to irreconcilable differences and the other personal and financial partners. Marco Pavignani became the club chairman and Stefano Pedrelli emerged the new director-general.

From 7 April 2011, after the resignation of Pavignani and having paid €2.5m, the new chairman was Albano Guaraldi, the second-largest shareholder of the consortium “Bologna 2010” with the 17% of the quotas, behind the outgoing Zanetti.

The 2013–14 season saw Bologna once again relegated to the Serie B, and also gave light to a number of financial problems involving the club and its ownership of Albino Guaraldi, who was considerably criticized by the team supporters also for a number of controversial decisions, including the sale of star player Alessandro Diamanti to Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande.

Bologna gained promotion back to Serie A in 2015 and in their first season back, the club finished 14th to avoid relegation. In the following seasons, Bologna finished in 15th place on the table and in the 2018-19 season, Bologna finished in a credible 10th position on the table.

The highest-paid player at Bologna FC is Mattia Destro. The Italian footballer earns €71,000 per week, followed by Blerim Dzemaili, who earns €43,000 per week.
