Manchester United have completed the signing of French center-back Raphael Varane for a transfer fee worth £34 million.

The 28-year-old center-back was not having the best of time at Real Madrid where he has been since July 1, 2011, after he joined the Spanish club from a French side, Lens for a transfer fee worth €11 million.

Manchester United gave the 28-year-old French defender a four-year deal which means that the Frenchman would remain at Old Trafford until June 30, 2025.

Though the official transfer fee Manchester United paid for the services of Raphael Varane is £32 million, the money could rise to £42 million if add-ons are included.

Manchester United and Real Madrid have agreed on this deal since July 26, 2021, but other aspects of the deal have delayed it until this moment. The fact that Raphael Varane was a part of France’s star-studded Euro 2020 squad increased his chance to be signed by the Premier League club.

Recall that Raphael Varane played an active role in France’s Euro 2020 outing and played in the four games that the national team played in the tournament before their sudden exit from it.

Raphael Varane is expected to add to the defensive options of coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who has been trying to build a title-winning team at Old Trafford for over three years.

He is the third player Manchester United have signed so far this summer. The other two are Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton.

“Manchester United is one of the most iconic clubs in world football,” Raphael Varane said after United announced the completion of his transfer from Real Madrid to Old Trafford.

“The chance to come here and play in the Premier League is something I couldn’t turn down.

“There is a lot more that I want to achieve in my career and I know I’m joining a squad full of great players who will all have the same determination to win matches and trophies.

“Having spoken to the manager, I can see how much progress has been made over the last few seasons and I now join a group ready to play at the highest level.

“I want to make an impact here and I will give everything to become part of this club’s illustrious history.”
