Roberto Mancini shed some tears immediately after Italy won Euro 2020 at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday, July 11, 2021.

The 56-year-old Italian tactician could not control his emotion when Bukayo Saka of England missed the last spot-kick of the thrilling encounter.

Though he was not allowed to fully demonstrate how emotional he felt before he was crowded by members of his technical crew, it was still obvious that he could not hold back his tears.

While addressing the press after Italy beat England in the final of Euro 2020, coach Roberto Mancini was also very emotional. He recalled how tough the Euro 2020 final against England was and how emotional it was to see the players celebrate at the end of the game.

“It was the emotion which happens after achieving something incredible. It was the emotion of seeing the guys celebrate and the fans in the stands,” Roberto Mancini said.

“Seeing everything we have managed to create, all of the hard work we have put in over the last three years, but specifically the last 50 days which have been very hard.

“It’s the fact we have been able to forge this team spirit over the last 50 days, they have created something which can never be separated going forward. They will always be synonymous with this triumph.”

Roberto Mancini played 26 times for Italy’s under-21 team and scored 9 goals before he gained promotion into Italy’s senior national team in 1984.

From then until 1994, Mancini played 36 times for the national team and scored just four goals. He was part of the team that failed to win Italia 90 and the Under-21 European Championship in 1986.

After he retired from professional football, he went into coaching. He started coaching football clubs including Manchester City and Inter Milan before he was appointed the coach of Italy in 2018. He took over the national team after the team failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Since then, Roberto Mancini has led Italy to 34 games unbeaten run which means that his team has not suffered a defeat in the last three years. They won Euro 2020 in England after winning all their games in the tournament.

With the win, Mancini’s team successfully ended Italy 53 years wait for a European Championship title.

“I was very fortunate to play in a great side in 1990 and a terrific under-21 team,” the Italian tactician said.

“Despite the fact we were the best team, we didn’t win it and lost both times on penalties.”

While the 36-year-old captain of Italy in Euro 2020, Giorgio Chiellini said: “A few tears fell. We all deserved it, at this age we realize even more what it means to win such a trophy.

“We have been saying that something magical is in the air since the end of May, day after day.”
