Former coach of England national team and Roma, Fabio Capello believes that the return of Jose Mourinho to Italy would uplift the profile of the Serie A.
The 74-year-old retired coach said he believes that the personality of the Portuguese coach might tempt football stars to move to Italy when they have to choose between Seria A and another league.
Though Fabio Capello spent 5 years managing England national team, he is famous for winning league titles with Milan, Real Madrid, Roma, and Juventus. The former Italian footballer and coach believes that Jose Mourinho might put an end to Roma’s 12 years wait for a title.
Jose Mourinho returned to the limelight when Roma announced his appointment about two weeks after he was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur for a poor run of games. He will take over the club in the 2021-2022 season.
Mourinho’s appointment has been generating mixed reactions in the media across the world. Many believe that Roma shouldn’t have appointed him because he failed to deliver at Tottenham. Many say the appointment is a sign of decline in the managerial career of the Portuguese coach because Roma might not play in the Champions League next season. They are currently sitting on the 7th spot on the league table.
However, many see it as a great boost to the profile of Roma who have been struggling both in Europe and in domestic football since the 2008-2009 season.
It is believed that Jose Mourinho understands how to succeed in Italy because of his exploit in Inter Milan where he won a Champions League and two successive Serie A titles.
Based on this, Fabio Capello believes that Jose Mourinho would bring the Scudetto to Roma for the first time since 2001. Recall that Capello was the last coach to win the Serie A title for Roma during his 5 years reign at the club, 1999-2004.
Capello said: “He will certainly bring some enthusiasm and the fans will expect a lot from him.
“But the most important thing for Roma is that when some players will be torn between going to Italy or somewhere else knowing about Mourinho, they will choose Italy.
“Italian football will enhance its appeal and this will be extremely important
“It will be important to pick the right players, of course, but when in doubt if going to Italy, Germany or France, a lot of players will want to go to Italy and this means strengthening the squad and having the chance to be competitive.”
While Roma are waiting for Jose Mourinho to join them next season, the club is currently battling to scale through to the final of the UEFA Europa League.
Later today, at 20:00, Roma will host Manchester United in the second leg of the semi-final round. The first leg ended 6-2 in favor of United which means that it would take a miracle for Roma to survive United.
