Gareth Bale is not in control of his future at Tottenham

The manager of Tottenham Hotspur, Jose Mourinho has revealed that the future of Gareth Bale is not in the hands of the club but the hands of his parent club, Real Madrid.

Recall that Gareth Bale returned to Tottenham on September 19, 2020, on loan from Real Madrid where he has been since he left the North London club on September 1, 2013, for a transfer fee worth €101milion.

In the first couple of years at Real Madrid, Bale was able to give a very good account of himself, scoring, assisting consistently, and helping the club to win major titles. Suddenly, off-the-field antics and drop-in form especially in his last two seasons at the club forced Madrid’s coach Zinedine Zidane to play him mostly from the bench.

It got so bad for Gareth Bale especially in the 2019-2020 season that he was mostly not named for games for one excuse or the other which confirmed to football fans that the 31-year-old Wales international was not wanted at the Spanish club.

Unfortunately for Bale, the coronavirus pandemic which affected the revenue of clubs and his high wage at Madrid, discouraged other clubs to attempt to buy him outrightly.

After a series of back and forth between Bale and the management of Real Madrid, the Welshman was able to secure a loan move back to Tottenham Hotspur last summer.

Yet, at first, it was not as rosy as he thought it would be. He first struggled with a series of injuries, match fitness, and lack of form before he began to settle down fully in the last couple of games.

Unfortunately for Bale who has scored three goals and provided two assists in 9 Premier League games so far this season for Spurs, his season-long loan deal will expire in June 2021, less than four months from now. This means that he is expected to return into the hands of Zinedine Zidane ahead of the 2021-2022 season if Tottenham do not find a way of extending his loan spell at the North London Club.

When Jose Mourinho was asked whether he wishes to keep Gareth Bale beyond the 2020-2021 season, the Portuguese tactician who is gradually growing fond of the 31-year-old winger, noted that Bale staying in London or returning to Madrid is in the hands of Real Madrid.

The coach who stated this during a pre-match press conference for the league match between Tottenham and Fulham on Thursday, March 4, stressed that only Madrid’s coach Zidane can answer questions about Bale’s future.

“About that, you should contact your colleagues in Madrid and they should ask (Zinedine) Zidane as he is a Real Madrid player.

“He is not a Tottenham player so Real Madrid have everything in their hands. They have a player with one year of the contract and have the power in their hands.

“I just have a player on loan and I am trying to make the best out of the player for Tottenham Hotspur.

“We try to take care of the player we have on loan for us but also for the respect we have for the club who loans the player.

“If you want to ask anything about Gareth’s future ask your colleagues in Madrid to ask Zidane.”

With this assertion, the possibility of Tottenham Hotspur pushing for the extension of Bale’s loan spell is very slim and he could return to his parent club at the end of this season except he continues to display extraordinary performance consistently.
