Premier League newcomers Sheffield United Football Club is an English professional football club located in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. The club also known as the Blades because of its history of steel production was found in 1889 as a part of the Sheffield United Cricket Club.
The Blades play their home games at Bramall Lane which is an all-seater ground with a current capacity of 32,125. Sheffield was a complete League One outfit on the brink of bankruptcy. Neil Warnock pulled the club up into the Premier League in 2002/03 season but the Blades could only survive one season in the top flight.
The cub dropped back to the Championship with spiraling wage bills of top players and disruptive management. Sheffield found themselves once again in League One. A major landmark happened in the club in 2013 when Saudi Prince Abdullah bin Musa’ed bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of the royal House of Saud bought a majority stake of the parent company and promised a swift return to the top-flight. Prince Musaád bin Khalid Al Saud was then appointed as the chairman of the club. Former British footballer Chris Wilder is the current manager of the side.
The Blades won the original Football League in 1898 and the FA Cup in 1899, 1902, 1915 and 1925. They were finalists in the FA Cup in 1901 and 1936, and reached the semi-finals in 1961, 1993, 1998, 2003 and 2014. They reached the semi-finals of the League Cup in 2003 and 2015.
The club who plays in red and white striped shirts with black shorts competes in the Premier League after winning promotion from the Championship in 2020. Their closest rivals are Sheffield Wednesday, with whom they contest the Steel City derby.
Former Everton defender Phil Jagielka is the club’s highest-paid Sheffield United player. He pockets a watering sum of £50,000. He started his career with the club in 2000, where he played mainly as a central midfielder.
The club’s second-highest-paid player is Muhamed Besic who played alongside Jagielka at Everton. Lys Mousset who joined the Blades from Bournemouth is the club’s third-highest earner.
