The pressure on Mikel Arteta as the football manager of Arsenal is increasing daily and it is becoming obvious that his days at Arsenal are numbered.
Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat away to Everton on Saturday made it 7 Premier League matches in a row that Mikel Arteta has failed to lead the club to a victory in the league. Instead of battling to make the top four as one of the biggest clubs in England, Arsenal are now battling to escape relegation.
It has gotten so bad that the London club is now sitting comfortably on the 15th spot with just 14 points in 14 league games which means that Arsenal is averaging a point per game.
In 14 league games, Arsenal have now recorded just 4 wins, 2 draws, and 8 defeats which is the worst start of a league season in the history of the club since the 1974-1975 season.
As it stands, Mikel Arteta and his boys are just 4 points away from the relegation zone which means that with a maximum of two more defeats, the club will be swimming in the relegation waters.
Arsenal are now 10 points away from the top four and it is becoming like Arsenal are more likely to go down than to go up if drastic changes are not made at the club.
Sky Sports’ pundit and Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher, believes that the change that is expected at Arsenal is not the sacking of Mikel Arteta but more recruitment.
Carragher who was speaking during the halftime break of the league match between Arsenal and Everton on Saturday stressed that the Spaniard needs more time to get things right at the club.
He noted that if about 7 new signings can be made at the club during the forthcoming January transfer window in addition to the summer signings – Gabriel Magalhaes, and Thomas Partey, the expected change would happen under Arteta’s watch.
“For [Arsenal] to get back to where they want to be, they will have to go through a lot of pain and they will do,” said Carragher.
“A couple of signings they made this season, Gabriel [Magalhaes], [Thomas] Partey, they could be a big part of Arsenal for years to come.
“But they need a few more players in the January transfer window. If Arteta can get six or seven players in then he can be judged on the job that he’s doing.”
Mikel Arteta knows that someday he will be sacked
Though Jamie Carragher is backing Arsenal’s board to allow Mikel Arteta to continue as the club’s manager, the Spaniard has already prepared his mind for the worst possible outcome which is getting a sack letter someday.
The coach said from the day he took up the coaching role, he knows that he could be sacked at any point in time but he is more focused on doing his best for Arsenal.
“It’s something that the day I decided to be a coach I know that one day I will be sacked or leave the football club,” said Arteta.
“I don’t know if it’s the day after I sign my contract, in a month, a year, or six months. I never worry about it.
“My only concern is to get the best out of the players, give the best possible service to the club, and become better and better.
“I know, I repeat, in this profession, one day I will get the sack or leave but I don’t know when that is going to happen.”
