Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani is set to remain at the French capital until the end of the season due to disagreement over the transfer fee between the club and Atletico Madrid. It is understood that a personal agreement has already been reached between Atleti and the striker.
Cavani’s contract with PSG expires at the end of the season and has handed in a transfer request in order to push through a move this month. Due to his lack of regular playing time, the Uruguayan has expressed his desire to leave the French capital.
The PSG star has fallen down the pecking order at the club due to the summer arrival of Mauro Icardi on loan from Inter Milan and a series of injuries that have affected him this season. Cavani has not played for PSG since January 12, with the French champions still publicly claiming that he is injured.
The Uruguayan, who turns 33 in February, joined PSG from Napoli in 2013 for £55m and has scored 195 goals in 269 appearances. He has only made nine Ligue 1 appearances this season and has played just 14 times in all competitions this season, scoring on five occasions. Cavani has also gone on to win different trophies for PSG during his seven-years spell.
And according to AS, Atletico don’t want to pay an exorbitant price for the striker because they feel he would be a free agent in the summer. The report added that PSG want £25m for the Uruguayan and Atléti are unwilling to meet the Parisian club’s demands. The Spanish club only offered £8.5m initially, and then £12.6m in a second bid.
The Spanish media outlet also reports that Atleti already have a high wage bill and are finding it hard to sell one of their highest earners in the January window. However, if the club can’t sell it would have been very difficult to bring in someone of Cavani’s expense.
Marca add that Atletico manager Diego Simeone has urged his side to bring in Cavani to solve their goal-scoring issues. But their £7.5million (€10m) valuation currently falls short of the Parisians’ demands. He is, however, keen to do a deal before Friday’s transfer deadline.
Diego Simeone’s side are in need of attacking reinforcements following the injury to Diego Costa in November. The former Chelsea striker was ruled out for up to three months after having an operation on a back problem.
