Hoffenheim Sack American Manager Pellegrino Matarazzo Following A Poor Start To The 2024/25 Season

Hoffenheim have dismissed American manager Pellegrino Matarazzo following a run of poor results that has left the team languishing in the bottom half of the German Bundesliga table.

Hoffenheim currently occupy the 15th position on the German top-flight league table, one point above the relegation zone.

Matarazzo was appointed boss of Hoffenheim on February 8, 2023, and he took charge of 67 matches, winning 24, drawing 14, and losing 29.

Pellegrino Matarazzo was formerly manager of VFB Stuttgart between December 2019 and October 2022.

He has in the past also been assistant manager of German side TSG Hoffenheim, working under Julian Nagelsmann and Alfred Schreuder.

Before he worked in the subservient position, Matarazzo had also handled the Under 17 side of TSG Hoffenheim.

The American Soccer coach had previously also had managerial stints with Nürnberg Under 19 and 17 sides, alongside being the assistant boss and manager of Nuremberg II.

Pellegrino Matarazzo led Hoffenheim to a 7th-place finish in the German Bundesliga last term, helping them qualify for the UEFA Europa League.

In his first season in charge of the club (2022/23), Matarazzo helped Hoffenheim avoid relegation, guiding them to a 12th-place finish on the Bundesliga table.

Moreover, The Kraichgauers are present in 19th position in the Europa League standings, having won just 1 game out of 4 matches thus far, drawing 2 and losing 1.

Hoffenheim’s Statement Confirming Their Decision To Part Ways With Pellegrino Matarazzo

Confirming the dismissal of Pellegrino Matarazzo, TSG Hoffenheim put out a statement on their website which read:

“Bundesliga football club TSG Hoffenheim has reacted to the current sporting situation. 

“Head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo and assistant coach Michael Kammermeyer have been released from their duties. 

“Until a successor is announced, training will be led temporarily by Frank Fröhling and Benjamin Hübner during the upcoming Bundesliga break.”

Matarazzo also indicated that he is proud to have worked with Hoffenheim alongside their coaching staff.

The 46-year-old also sent his best wishes to the club, while expressing his gratitude to the side for the opportunity handed to him.

Pellegrino Matarazzo shared: “I am proud to have worked with this team and this coaching staff who were willing to go through fire with and for each other. 

“I will always be grateful for that. I wish TSG a successful future and our boys maximum success in all three competitions.”
