Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has become the first player to publicly react to Erik ten Hag’s shocking departure from the club.
Manchester United sacked Ten Hag just three months after his contract extension amidst the team’s struggling 2024-25 campaign.
The Dutch coach’s departure was announced the day following the club’s 2-1 loss to West Ham in the Premier League.

Ten Hag had appointed Fernandes as captain, replacing Harry Maguire. The Dutch manager is set to receive a substantial £15million compensation package.
Fernandes acknowledged the team’s recent struggles but encouraged fans to cherish Ten Hag’s positive contributions.
He added: “Even knowing the last period hasn’t been great, I hope you fans keep the good things he’s done for our club!”

Former Arsenal and Chelsea star Emmanuel Petit has urged Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes to take responsibility for the team’s struggles following Erik ten Hag’s sacking.
Petit believes Fernandes failed to lead by example during the crisis period. Speaking to Jeffbet, Petit stated: “It was time for Ten Hag to go, but players must share responsibility. They’re the reason he’s been sacked.”
Petit highlighted Fernandes’ disappointing performance against West Ham and questioned his captaincy.
He added: “Bruno Fernandes annoys me. He was terrible against West Ham, a terrible captain. He’s not captain material.” Petit also criticized Ten Hag’s tactics and signings.
On the Dutch boss, Petit said: “Ten Hag brought average Dutch players from Eredivisie. He showed no passion, seemed bored in press conferences.”
Furthermore, the Frenchman expressed concerns about Manchester United’s future, stating: “The only consistent thing is their average performance.”
“Even with a new manager, nothing will change. The players’ body language has been awful.”
Additionally, Petit doubts potential managers will be attracted to the club, he added: “If I were a manager, I’d ask: what’s the project? What are the ambitions? I don’t see anything worth joining them for.”
