Manchester City are now fourth on the ranking of Premier League Clubs with the longest unbeaten record in the English top flight.

The Citizens escaped with a narrow 2-1 victory over Wolves at the Molineux Stadium in the last match, thanks to a stoppage-time winner by John Stones.

They went into the game on a 30-match unbeaten streak in the Premier League. Wolves nearly pulled an upset, ending the unbeaten streak when Strand Larsen scored just seven minutes into the game to give Wolves the lead.

However, a 33rd-minute strike by Jeremy Doku restored parity before Stones’ late strike sealed victory. City have now gone 31 matches unbeaten in the England top flight. Which other teams have managed long streaks of unbeaten runs in the English top flight?

Manchester United (1999 and 2011)

Under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United roared through the Premier League with a long, unbeaten streak.

The Red Devils managed to go 29 matches without any defeat. Notably, United achieved this feat twice under Sir Alex Ferguson. The first was in 1999, and the second over a decade later in 2011.

Manchester City and Arsenal

After Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City recorded the next longest unbeaten run in the Premier League. However, the two clubs accomplished the feat 14 years apart.

Arsenal, under the watch of legendary manager Arsene Wenger, went without defeat in 30 matches in 2002. It was a redefining moment in the Gunners’ history.

The prolific run saw the team win the 2001-02 Premier League title. They finished top of the table with 87 points, 7 points clear of runners-up Liverpool with 26 wins, 9 draws, and 3 defeats.

Manchester City also managed a similar number of games without defeat, but recently in 2018 under Pep Guardiola. It was a record-breaking campaign for the emerging Premier League giants.

Premier League clubs with the longest unbeaten record

Guardiola led the club to their highest Premier League points—100. They ended the season with 32 Premier League victories, 4 draws, and 2 defeats, clinching their second Premier League title.

Chelsea and Liverpool among Premier League clubs with the longest unbeaten record

Jose Mourinho made his mark in the Premier League on his debut  campaign as Chelsea manager in the 2004-05 season. He led the club to the Premier League title, winning 29 games, drawing nine, and managing only just one defeat. Notably, he took the club to an astonishing 40-match unbeaten streak in that period.

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also etched his name into Premier League history books. In his first and only Premier League title with the Reds, the German led the team to a record 99 points, winning 33 matches, drawing 3, and losing 3.

His most remarkable feat in that stretch was leading the team to a 44-match unbeaten streak. Watford ended the team’s unbeaten run with a shock 3-0 away loss on February 29, 2020.

Arsenal tops list of Premier League clubs with the longest unbeaten record

Arsenal are still leading the pack with the longest unbeaten record in the Premier League. The Gunners, who initially recorded a 30-match unbeaten run in 2002, recorded an incredible 49-match unbeaten streak still under Arsene Wenger in 2004.

Famously tagged as the ‘Invincibles Era,’ Arsenal became the first Premier League club to finish an entire season without a single loss in that stretch.

They finished the campaign amassing 90 points from 26 Premier League wins, 12 draws, and 0 defeats. The terrific run saw the team clinch the Premier League title.

The towering record by the Gunners has yet to be broken. Liverpool came close in 2020 with their 44-match unbeaten run before it ended against Watford.

Manchester City will be looking to challenge the record with their current 31-match unbeaten streak. But it is likely to be a daunting task for the Premier League champions, who need 19 more games to match and break the record.
