Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was shown a red card for the second time in five days.
In the Europa League match against FC Porto, the Portuguese midfielder was dismissed after a high foot in the 82nd minute while Manchester United were behind.
After the Manchester United captain received the red, former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson defended Fernandes, saying, “Bruno Fernandes is not happy. He has gone in high with his foot, and it is dangerous. He is looking at the ball, but when you do that, you give the referee no option.”
Fernandes has been handed a one-match ban, which means he will miss the Manchester United Europa League clash against Fenerbahce on October 24, 2024.
The sending off added to the team’s dreadful performance in the Europa League. The Manchester United team started the game exceptionally well, and they were 2-0 ahead in the first 20 minutes.
Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund put the Red Devils ahead after Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa’s howler.
Porto star Pepe got the first goal for the Portugal side. A few minutes later, Samu Omorodin scored a powerful header to secure the equaliser for his team.
Early in the second half, Omorodin completed the comeback against Manchester United with extreme pressure mounting on Erik Ten Hag.
However, Harry Maguire rescued a point for Manchester United after the English international scored a powerful header before the end of the game.
The Red Devils are currently in 21st place in the Europa League table after two points from two matches. In the 2024-25 Europa League season, the team has lost their lead twice.
