    The Carabao Cup Round Three tie involving AFC Wimbledon and Newcastle United was postponed due to extensive flooding of the River Wandle and surrounding areas, including the stadium of the former.

    The encounter between AFC Wimbledon and the Magpies was initially due to take place on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

    However, the game will now be played at St. James’ Park on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, with the kick-off pegged at  7:45 pm (GMT +).

    The fixture was rescheduled following an agreement between AFC Wimbledon and Newcastle United alongside subsequent approval from the management committee of the EFL Cup.

    The Wombles have also notified their fans about the postponement through a statement shared on their social media accounts which read:

    “We regret to inform fans that due to extensive overnight flooding of the River Wandle, Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup third-round fixture against Newcastle United has been postponed.”

    Who Set Up The Crowdfunding Campaign For AFC Wimbledon?

    AFC Wimbledon’s Cherry Red Records Stadium was seen in a poor state due to the flood and fan Graham Stacey was pushed to initiate a crowdfunding campaign to settle repair costs for damage caused by the flooding.

    Reports indicate that more than £90,000 has been raised on the JustGiving page, with the donations aimed at supporting the Wombles.

    The initial sum to be raised was pegged at £10,000, but that has been altered at different times to £100,000 and currently £150,000.

    Newcastle United Pledge £15,000 To AFC Wimbledon

    Heartwarmingly, Newcastle United have also pledged £15,000 to help their EFL Cup 3rd opposition sort their flooded pitch.

    Meanwhile, the River Wandle had not broken its banks before last weekend since the 1960s.

    However, more than a month’s worth of rainfall fell on Sunday and Monday in parts of England, and that resulted in the subsequent flooding.

    AFC Wimbledon Looking For Alternative Ground To Play Their Coming Home Matches

    Based on reports, AFC Wimbledon are searching for an alternative ground to prosecute their EFL League Two matchday 8 action against Accrington Stanley slated for Saturday, September 28, 2024.

    Their league clash with Crewe Alexandra initially scheduled for October 1, 2024, has also been postponed due to a new date fixed for The Dons EFL Cup clash against Newcastle United.
