England interim manager Lee Carsley revealed Olympique Marseille attacker Mason Greenwood was not considered for a place in the Three Lions squad.
After he was questioned for not selecting Greenwood for the match against Ireland, Carsley said, “Mason wasn’t a player we could consider; I’m aware of how he’s doing, but he wasn’t under consideration.”
The former Manchester United player has previously been affected by different issues off the pitch that led to the player early exit from Old Trafford.
While Southgate was the manager of the England national team, he didn’t close the door on Greenwood’s return.
Southgate admitted it will never happen before the Euro 2024 because he needs clarity on the player’s situation.
He said, “I think at this moment in time it would be a big distraction for the team, and let’s see where that leads next season. I would need to know more details about the whole thing before it was an option.”
The former U21 England manager stepped up to take over from Gareth Southgate, who resigned after the country’s national team failed to secure a win in the 2024 Euro final against Spain.
Lee Carsley has been seen to be totally different from Southgate with his mode of selection. For the 2024 UEFA Nations League against Ireland, the manager selected a lot of unfamiliar faces.
