Over the years, football clubs have paid exorbitant fees to bring in managers some of which succeed by winning titles or making their respective clubs become title contenders.

Not all Expensive managers who were signed for these huge fees commanded success in their respective clubs, hence, their stay at their respective clubs was cut short.

Below are the 10 most expensive managers in football history: 

  1. 1. Julian Naglesmann

The German tactician is one of the most expensive coaches in football history after Bayern Munich paid RB Leipzig £21.7 million to sign him.

He was one of the most sought-after young managers while he was at RB Leipzig. During his tenure at Bayern Munich, Nagelsmann won the German Bundesliga title and two German Super Cups.

He ended his tenure as a Bayern Munich manager with a 71.24% winning rate. Out of the 84 matches he managed, Nagelsmann won 60, drew 14, and lost just 10 matches.

Chelsea paid a compensation fee worth £21.5 million to bring Graham Potter to Stamford Bridge.

The Chelsea bosses were in love with Potter’s style of play at Brighton, and many thought he was going to bring back the Chelsea glory days. 

However, the club failed to get the needed results, and he was sacked after 31 matches in charge.

Potter’s winning rate at Chelsea was 38.7%. The Englishman was able to win 12 matches, coupled with eight draws and 11 losses. He failed to win a single silverware at Chelsea.

Under Roman Abramovich, Chelsea paid a large fee worth £13.3 million to take Villas Boas away from FC Porto. His tenure at Chelsea was a bad one, with the Portuguese managing just 20 wins in 40 games.

He was sacked without winning a single trophy for the London side. The Villas-Boas signing was regarded as one of the worst Chelsea had made because he lost the dressing room in the first half of the season.

Amorim was barely a recognized manager when Sporting CP paid £8.6 million to sign him from Braga in 2020. His reputation as one of the most talented managers came during his four years at Sporting CP.

He managed 206 matches at Sporting CP, where he won 146 games, drew 31, and lost 31 in all competitions. Amorim won one Primeira Liga, two Taca da Ligas, and one Supertaca Candido de Oliveira.

Real Madrid paid £6.9 million to lure the Special One to Santiago Bernabeu from Inter Milan.

His tenure at Real Madrid was met with dominance from the Barcelona side, which made his success at Real Madrid not loud enough.

He won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup in Spain. Mourinho ended his Real Madrid tenure with a 71.34 winning percentage.

Out of 178 matches in charge of Real Madrid, Mourinho managed to win 127 matches, coupled with 28 draws and 23 losses.

Everton paid Southampton £5 million to take the former Barcelona manager to the Merseyside Blue. He had an impressive campaign at Southampton, where he took the Saint to the European Competition.

However, he was unable to replicate the same success at the Toffes. After just one year at the club, the manager left Everton. During his tenure at Everton, he won 24 matches, drew 14, and lost 20.
