Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea remains a free agent and was spotted training at non-league Altrincham’s stadium, Moss Lane.
David de Gea’s 12 years stint at Manchester United was brought down at Old Trafford following the expiration of his contract last summer, afterward, the Spaniard departed the English club after failing to agree an extension.
The conditions around his departure were controversial with few United supporters wanting De Gea to sign contract expansion, while others believed the club needed to move on due to concerns over his distribution and ability to play out from the back with the ball at his feet.
Recall that De Gea made a series of horrible mistakes towards the end of last season and Erik ten Hag decided to replace him with Andre Onana, who was acquired from Inter Milan.
After David de Gea departed Old Trafford, there was concrete interest from Saudi Arabia in the former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper, but he opted against a move to the Middle East and his options became limited.
At the time of De Gea’s exit from Man United, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich were in search of goalkeepers but the European powerhouse later signed Kepa Arrizabalaga and Daniel Peretz respectively.
The 33-year-old began the 2023/24 season as a free agent and he’s gone the entire season without a new club, which has led to speculation about his retirement.
However, De Gea has recently shared training footage on his social media across the last six months and his latest post showed him training at Moss Lane, home of non-league Altrincham.
Moss Lane Stadium is a short distance away from Hale, an affluent area of Greater Manchester where plenty of United players past and present reside.
During his spell at Old Trafford, David De Gea won the Golden Glove award last season after recording the most clean sheets in the English Premier League, which enlarges the weirdness of his status as a free agent.
He is considered a modern legend at Man United due to his 545 appearances for the Red Devils, a club record for a goalkeeper, and could eventually be given a testimonial game shortly.
De Gea was a fan favorite and won several honors including the English Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League, and two Carabao Cup titles.
What’s next for David de Gea?
It remains to be seen if the 33-year-old goalkeeper will find himself a new club in Europe or elsewhere, or consider his retirement.
