The nightmarish start to life for Andre Onana at Manchester United has continued, with the goalkeeper having a horrible performance that he would want to forget in a hurry against Galatasaray.
Onana was culpable for an error which resulted in the Turkish club receiving a penalty in the 78th minute.
His ill-timed pass was snatched by Dries Mertens, and the Belgian raced into the box of Manchester United before he was fouled by Casemiro.
Andre Onana’s misplaced pass culminated in Casemiro being dismissed in the 77th minute, as the Brazilian impeded Mertens whilst trying to save Manchester United from conceding with a last ditch challenge.
Mauro Icardi stepped up and missed the resultant spot kick, and Onana could have been spared from some vile critiscisms had the result even ended with the Red Devils and Galatasaray sharing the spoils.
However, Icardi made amends for his penalty miss by scoring in the 81st minute, with a brilliant chip over the Manchester United shot-stopper.
It appears like the Cameroonian’s confidence level is at its lowest, and that has been witnessed in his disposition in recent weeks.
Erik Ten Hag backs Onana to return back to top form at Manchester United
Erik Ten Hag also had his say on Andre Onana and his underwhelming performances for Manchester United, but he chose to back his goalie.
Ten Hag said: “I will encourage Onana, I will back him — I will support him”.
“He’s great goalkeeper. He can be one of the best in the world”.
The Dutchman also added that the man he also managed at Ajax will “bounce back” to his best.
He said: “We have seen already Onana’s great capabilities and also his personality. He will bounce back, I’m sure”.
Andre Onana joined Manchester United from Inter Milan on July 20, 2023, for a fee of €52.5 million.
He has made 10 appearances for Manchester United, and conceded 18 staggering goals.
This statistics dosen’t look bright, and it isn’t certain if his time at the Old Trafford club would be a success, judging from his first 10 competitive matches for the club.
He was signed to replace David De Gea, who presumably left Manchester United due to his frailties regarding ball distribution.
De Gea won the Golden Glove award for the 2022/23 Premier League season, having amassed 17 clean sheets in 38 appearances.
Unfortunately, his replacement at Old Trafford is yet to hit the ground running, and this has been upsetting to Manchester United supporters.
Despite Andre Onana’s shaky display, Erik Ten Hag has always fielded him this season, with second-choice Altay Bayindir not given any minute under his belt so far.
Onana won the Golden Glove for the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League, keeping 8 clean sheets in 13 appearances for Inter Milan.
However, he hasn’t shown promising signs that he would be able to reach such outstanding heights at Manchester United.
