Sevilla defender Simon Kjaer has joined AC Milan on a loan deal for the remainder of the season with the option to buy, the Italian club have confirmed.
The Denmark international joined Atalanta on loan over the summer but struggled for game time under manager Gian Piero Gasperini, managing just six appearances in all competitions. The centre-back was then recalled to Spain after a deal with Milan was agreed on last week. However, the Italian club sent Mattia Caldara back to Atalanta on loan.
The 30-year-old has spent time in Serie A before with Roma in 2011-12, where he made 22 appearances on loan from Wolfsburg and spent time at Palermo before that as well as Lille and Fenerbahce.
Kjaer will join up with his new teammates later on Monday, before being officially presented to the media on Thursday. According to Milan, they have the option to sign the defender permanently at the end of the season if he can impress during his brief spell at San Siro.
Milan have taken to their official website on Monday to confirm the arrival of the defender on a six-month loan. A statement on the club’s website read: “AC Milan have reached an agreement with Sevilla FC for the acquisition of Simon Kjaer on a six-month loan until June 30, 2020, with an option to make the deal permanent.
“Kjær, born in Horsens (Denmark) on March 26, 1989, started his career in the academy at FC Midtjylland, making his first-team debut in the 2007/08 season.
“During his career, he has also played with US Palermo, VfL Wolfsburg, AS Roma, LOSC Lille, Fenerbahçe SK, Sevilla FC and Atalanta BC, registering 20 goals in a total of 408 appearances.
“Kjær has been the captain of the Denmark national team since 2016, with three goals in 95 appearances.”
He becomes Milan’s second signing of the January transfer window, following the arrival of striker Zlatan Ibrahimović, who netted his first goal of the season in the 2-0 win over Cagliari on Saturday.
