With the staggering amounts that have been spent this summer in the transfer market, there was an indication that a massive record would be broken before the transfer window closes on September 1.
As expected, the global record for spending in the transfer market for a single transfer window has been smashed this summer.
The previous record was set in 2019 when clubs from across the world spent a humongous £6.1 billion.
However, this summer, £6.56 billion has been spent globally, based on data provided by Transfermarkt.
This summer transfer window has seen players move from clubs to clubs, and continent to continent for astonishing amounts.
Spending in the English Premier League has hit about £2.1 billion, and more spending is still expected to be made in the next 48 hours.
The transfer window comes to an end on Friday, September 1, 2023, and lots of businesses have been done.
Saudi Arabia activities impacted the global Transfer record
The influence of Saudi Arabia and their financial muscle have been felt in the transfer market this summer, having spent a whopping £728 million.
This puts the summer spending for Saudi Arabia second behind the Premier League, and ahead of the Italian Serie A.
The Italian football top-flight division have forked out a massive £682 million, and, shockingly, La Liga is far behind in terms of spending.
Spending in the La Liga have shrunk in the last few years, due to financial restrictions and mismanagement from clubs in the league.
Clubs in the German Bundesliga have spent £598 million so far this summer, with French Ligue 1 coming in fourth, with £594 million transfer spending this summer.
How much have La Liga clubs spent in the 2023/24 summer transfer window?
The Spanish La Liga that has produced several winners of the Ballon d’Or are bottom of this ranking that also includes Saudi Arabia. La Liga clubs have spent £342 million so far this summer.
This summer saw Chelsea break the British transfer record with the signing of Moises Caicedo for £115 million.
Neymar also left Paris Saint Germain to join Al Hilal for £86.3 million, and he is the most expensive signing in the history of the Saudi Pro League.
If many were told that Saudi Arabia would be ruffling feathers with some of the big leagues in the world several years back, they would have most likely expressed their huge doubts.
However, only the Premier League trumps the Saudi Pro League in terms of spending this summer.
The Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund took over the management of four of the top clubs in the Saudi Pro League, namely; Al Ittihad, Al Nassr, Al Hilal, and Al Ahli and they have dolled out the cash massively.
Big names like Sadio Mane, Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, Roberto Firmino amongst others all made moves to the Saudi Pro League this summer.
The Premier League have also seen massive money moves this summer apart from that of Caicedo, with Declan Rice also joining Arsenal for a staggering 105 million transfer fee including add-ons.
