Southampton’s Nathan Tella has completed a move to Bundesliga giant Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of £20 million. Tella signed for five years with the club.
Southampton confirmed the player’s departure via an official statement on their website, saying, “Although disappointed to lose such a talented homegrown player and popular character, the club felt the offer represented fair value.”
However, Tella told Leverkusen, “Many younger players from the Premier League got a chance in the Bundesliga and were able to improve significantly here.”
Xabi Alonso wanted the player after the departure of Moussa Diaby to Aston Villa.
The 24-year-old star was on loan at Burnley in the Championship last season, scoring 17 goals and creating five assists, which delivered the title and a promotion to the Premier League.
He spent six years at the Arsenal academy before moving to Southampton in 2017, where he made his debut in 2020 against Norwich.
He was part of the Southampton side this season in the Championship, scoring once. Tella was never a regular player at Southampton, making 44 appearances in six seasons at the club.
Southampton have lost a lot of youngsters in the current transfer window. Tino Livramento completed a permanent move to Newcastle.
James Ward-Prowse moved to West Ham United and has been an integral part of the Hammers side, who are currently at the top of the Premier League table.
Romeo Lavia moved to Chelsea but hasn’t made his debut for the London side.
