Antonio Conte is expected to part company with Inter by mutual consent next week after his post-Europa League Final comments, with reports Max Allegri will take over. The Italian has fallen out with the Inter hierarchy after making angry comments at the end of the Serie A season three weeks ago, claiming his side had to ‘eat dung’ given by the owners during their faltering title campaign.

Conte’s Inter finished the Serie A season with a 2-0 win over Atalanta, ending the campaign just a point behind champions Juventus. The standings fail to tell the full story, however: their title chances had realistically collapsed before lockdown, and they sat seven points behind the Old Lady at the point Maurizio Sarri’s team secured the league for a ninth straight season.

Conte after the Europa League final

Former Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri is ready to return to work and is anxiously awaiting the outcome of the meeting between Inter coach Antonio Conte and the board. Allegri was the last manager to stop Juventus from winning Serie A when he led AC Milan to the title in 2011. He actually replaced Conte too at Juventus when Conte left to coach the national team. Allegri continued Juve’s domestic dominance but couldn’t deliver success on the European front although he reached two finals where he lost to Barcelona and Real Madrid. As a result of that, he left the Turin stadium last season and has been out of a job since then.

Allegri wants to win the scudetto with the three great northern Italian teams of Inter, AC Milan and Juventus which would set a new record and has a good relationship with Inter CEO Beppe Marotta from their time together in Turin. Inter aren’t looking to dismiss Conte, not least because of the remaining two years on his €12 million a season contract, which would have to be paid if he was dismissed. He could still choose to resign. Everything will become clearer after next week’s meeting.
