Manchester United have officially announced the acquisition of Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund for a reported fee of £72 million ($92m).
Hojlund traveled to Manchester on Tuesday, August 1st, and underwent his medical test at Carrington.
The 20-year-old veteran striker has now been officially unveiled as latest Manchester United signing today, August 5.
Meanwhile, Paris St-Germain, the champions of Ligue 1, were reportedly interested in Hojlund as a potential replacement for Kylian Mbappe, whose immediate future is uncertain.
The Red Devils have eventually hijacked Rasmus Hojlund from other suitors and he will be at Old Trafford until 2028.
The five-year deal Hojlund signed with United also have the option of a contract extension for an additional year.
According to reports, United have paid Atalanta an upfront fee of £62m ($79m) for Hojlund, with an additional £8m to be paid based on performance-related add-ons.
Upon his arrival at Old Trafford, Hojlund openly admitted that he has been a devoted fan of the exceptional club since his childhood.
He added: “I had a dream of stepping onto the field at Old Trafford as a player for Manchester United.”
He has now joined forces with his countryman Christian Eriksen at the club level. Before he arrived in England, his Denmark teammate spoke highly of him.
Eriksen said: “He is a formidable number nine.”
“He has made significant progress over the past year since I first saw him playing for the national team. Therefore, I can confidently say that he is a highly skilled player.”
Rasmus Hojlund is the third summer signing for United manager Erik ten Hag, following the arrival of Mason Mount from Chelsea for £55m and Andre Onana from Inter Milan for £47.2m.
Hojlund’s professional career
Hojlund started his professional career in Copenhagen, where he made his debut in the Danish Superliga at the age of 17 in 2020. He then transferred to Sturm Graz, an Austrian team, two years later.
After joining Sturm in January 2022, he spent only six months in the Austrian Bundesliga.
During this time, he showcased an impressive performance. In 17 starts, he managed to find the net nine times.
His impressive performance resulted in his transfer to Atalanta, with a reported fee of £15m, which was ten times the amount that Sturm Graz had originally paid for him.
He made his international debut in 2022 and scored six goals in six games during the Euro 2024 qualifying matches.
What’s next for Rasmus Hojlund and Manchester United?
Hojlund will be eager to make his competitive debut for United as they kick off their 2023-24 Premier League season against Wolves on August 14th.
