Henderson spent last season on loan at Bramall Lane but after a fantastic season for him, a new contract is being prepared for him at Manchester United. Only eventual Golden Glove winner Ederson(16) and his runner up Nick Pope(15) kept more clean sheets than Henderson in the just-concluded season. He was also nominated for the Young Player of the Season award for his contributions in helping his side finish 9th in their first season since promotion.
His immediate future at Old Trafford has also been questioned as experienced David de Gea is expected to remain United’s undisputed No.1, meaning Henderson could join Sheffield United on loan again for the upcoming campaign. But the Blades have been on the lookout for a new keeper to replace Henderson, and Aaron Ramsdale looks set to sign from Bournemouth following their relegation from the Premier League.
Henderson has said goodbye to Sheffield United after his loan at Bramall Lane: “I will look back at the last two years as an important chapter in my career… I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to learn and develop with such a class group of lads.” The 23-year-old has enjoyed two very impressive seasons at Sheffield United but does not want to return to Old Trafford and play second fiddle to current first-choice David De Gea and understandably so. The Spaniard has made a couple of high-profile mistakes in recent times, leading to calls for Henderson to replace him in goal for United but another loan deal seems more likely.
However, De Gea still feels he should be the starting goalkeeper for the Red Devils. Earlier this week, he said: “I trust in myself. I have shown my qualities all the years. So I will just stay available for the manager. I’m always ready to play and try to help the team, as I have always done.”
Henderson is ‘on the verge of signing a mega new four-year Old Trafford deal worth £100,000 a week’ with Man Utd concerned about interest from the likes of Chelsea. The deal represents a big leap of faith from the Red Devils with Henderson’s new contract taking the club’s spending on goalkeepers alone to ‘£575k a week’.
