Luis Suarez has cleared the route for a reunion with his former Barcelona teammates at Inter Miami as he agrees to terminate his Gremio contract.
The Uruguayan and Liverpool legend confirmed on Saturday, 29th July, 2023 he will leave Gremio few months after joining the club from Nacional
Luis Suarez joined Gremio last summer, signing a two-year contract till 2024. He has been linked with a move to Inter Miami where he could possibly reunite with the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Albaz – his former teammates at Barcelona.
He has made 32 appearances for Gremio, scoring 14 goals in Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A – Brazil’s elite league division.
Despite his prolific stats for Gremio, Luis Suarez career as taken a deep downturn since he left Barcelona to Atletico Madrid in 2020.
Suarez left Barcelona as a hero, making 191 appearances for the club with 147 goals. He won four La Liga titles, four Copa Del Rey titles, two Supercopa de Espana, one Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA World Club Cup.
He also won the La Liga with Atletico Madrid on his debut season in 2021, scoring 32 goals in 67 appearances for the club.
After two years at the Spanish capital, Suarez returned to his boyhood club, National, in Uruguay where he spent a season, making 14 appearances and scoring 8 goals.
From Nacional, the 37-year-old signed for Gremio for two years but has now been forced to agree contract termination amid links to Inter Miami.
Annoucing his decision to terminate his Gremio contract, Suarez cited his knee iniury and age as reasons for his decision to end his deal with the Brazilian club.
The former Ajax forward said he is not sure he will be able to see through his contract till 2024. He confirmed he has spoken to Gremio to end his contract and an agreement has been reached but he will continue with the club for few months till December to complete a full year cycle before departure
“I feel that next year I will not be able to perform due to my fitness and the high demands of the Brazilian championship, which is why the club and I have spoken about ending my contract [with Gremio] a year early. That would be in December. The club agreed and I’m grateful to them,” he said.
On chances of continuing with his game, Luis Suarez failed to provide an answer, saying he doesn’t know whether he will continue playing or not. He also debunked rumors linking him to Inter Miami though he confirmed the MLS side have spoken with Gremio but have not talked with him.
“I don’t know if I’ll continue to play somewhere else because I have a chronic issue with my knee that you all know about. I’d ask Gremio supporters to value the fact that they have a 37-year-old player who always plays despite having a lot of pain in his knee. That’s all I ask.”
“I’m well aware that Inter Miami spoke with Gremio and that the club told them that I have a contract. I can say that [Inter Miami] has not spoken to me,” he said.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Inter Miami are still on the trail of Luis Suarez and will likely sign the player as a free agent in 2024.
While Suarez has attributed his decision to end his Gremio contract to his knee problems, it is believed the Liverpool legend is hoping to join Inter Miami in 2024 when he will leave Gremio.
He will become the fourth former Barcelona player to join the club with Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, all signing for the club this summer.
Another former Barcelona player, Andres Iniesta is also linked to a move to the club this summer.
