Chelsea and Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is set for a new chapter after a difficult career at Stamford Bridge.
The former Arsenal striker has reached an agreement for three-year contract with Olympique de Marseille to join the club this summer.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are ready to allow Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leave the club on a free transfer after just a year into his two years contract.
The decision to allow the Gabon international leave for free is not coming as a surprise after the torrid chapter of his career at Stamford Bridge.
After just seven months at Barcelona, Chelsea signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the last hours last summer for £10.3m.
Under former manager, Thomas Tuchel, Aubameyang was offered a two year contract and used as a top striker in the Blues’ starting lineup.
He played all 6 Champions League group Stage matches for Chelsea, scoring 2 goals. He also raked up 15 Premier League appearances for the club with a goal.
Aubameyang’s Chelsea fortunes took a drastic downturn after Graham Potter became Chelsea new manager following the sack of Thomas Tuchel.
His rating under the former Brighton boss dropped drastically. Potter axed off Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Chelsea starting lineup and also deregistered him from Chelsea Champions League squad.
Despite lacking a frontline striker, Potter opted for the likes of attacking midfielders such as Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz to lead the Blues’ attack.
Cutting a frustrated figure in Chelsea’s squad, it was clear Aubameyang will opt for greener pastures this summer to breath life back to his career with Chelsea ready to write off his remaining one-year contract and let him leave for free.
It has been confirmed Aubameyang is edging close to a move to Olympique de Marseille with the two parties having settled for a three-year contract which will see the Chelsea forward stay at the French side till 2026.
Details of the move have reportedly been finalized with medical set to be completed on Thursday, July 20, to seal the move.
Aubameyang’s imminent exit is part of the club’s ongoing summer overhaul which has seen big-name first team players leave the squad.
N’Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly, Mateo Kovacic, Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Christian Pulisic, Cesar Azpilicueta have all left the club this summer.
More departures are still expected in the coming days as the club press on with the overhaul and squad downsize. Morocco international Hakim Ziyech and Romelu Lukaku are all expected to make the piling exit lists this summer.
Aubameyang is the 10th player to leave the club and second player to be handed a free exit after Cesar Azpilicueta. Azpilicueta had a year remaining in his Chelsea contract but was allowed to leave for free to Atletico Madrid with the remaining 12 months of his contract written off.
