Leeds United have completed the signing of Welshman Ethan Ampadu from Chelsea on a four-year deal for a fee of £7 million, with inclusion of performance related add-ons.

Ampadu made only 12 first team appearances in total for Chelsea, scoring no goal and providing no assist.

He joined the West London side at the age of 16 from Exeter City in July 2017 for a reported fee of €2.8 million.

Confirming the arrival of the defender to Elland Road, Leeds United put out a statement on their website which reads:

“Leeds United are delighted to announce the signing Ethan Ampadu, in a permanent transfer.

“The versatile defender, who can also operate in midfield, joins the club from Chelsea for an undisclosed fee.

“The 22-year-old has penned a four-year deal at Elland Road, running until the summer of 2027.”

Ethan Ampadu couldn’t develop optimally at Stamford Bridge, despite coming in with lots of prospects.

The 22-year-old has endured loan stints with Sheffield United, RB Leipzig, Venenzia and Spezia.

His spell at RB Leipzig wasn’t palatable as he made only 7 appearances for the side, scoring no goal and providing no assist.

With Sheffield United, he made 29 appearances for the side but he couldn’t help rescue the side from relegation to the Championship.

At Venezia and Spezia, he made 30 and 34 appearances respectively, however, shockingly both clubs also got relegated to the second division.

Ethan Ampadu is the first signing of Leeds United this summer

Ethan Ampadu becomes the first arrival at Leeds this summer under newly appointed manager Daniel Farke.

There was a need for signings this summer after loan departures of Rasmus Kristensen, Diego Llorente and Robin Koch.

Ethan Ampadu has penned a four-year deal with Leeds United

The signing of Ampadu will offer manager Daniel Farke enough room to strategize his side in defense, although the 22-year-old can also function as a holding midfielder.

Leeds United will be competing in the Championship during the upcoming season, having been relegated from the Premier League last term.

They will be expected to make needed reinforcements as they aim to return to the top-flight of English football.

Ethan Ampadu wasn’t given much game time by majority of the managers during his time at Chelsea, as they felt he didn’t have the qualities to start for the Southwest Londoners.

However, the former Venezia man was included in Mauricio Pochettino’s side preseason activities this summer.

The 22-year-old made 13 appearances for Exeter City, where he attracted the interest of Chelsea, scoring no goal but providing 1 assist.

Exeter City are also set to earn an extra 20% of the profit made by the Blues from his sale.

This is in addition to the £1.6 million the Stamford Bridge club paid to sign him in 2017 and this is due to a tribunal agreement.

Ethan Ampadu is the son of ex-Swansea, Arsenal and Exeter City midfielder Kwame Ampadu.

The 22-year-old has made 44 appearances for Wales, scoring no goal and providing 1 assist.
