PSG goalkeeper, Sergio Rico is now out of intensive care unit at Sevilla-based hospital after a fatal accident in May.

PSG and football fans across the world awoke to the shock news of Sergio Rico’s disastrous accident that nearly claimed his life.

The Sevilla-born goalie undertook a horseback pilgrimage to Huelva in Spain when he suddenly fell off the horse and sustained life-threatening injury.

He had to be immediately hospitalized following the injury with reports emerging he was in deep coma.

Rico’s condition did not improve after being admitted into the hospital. Sources close to the Spaniard revealed he was placed on sedation and taken off before being readmitted into intensive care for the second time.

Sergio Rico’s condition attracted prayers and sympathy from football fans across the world, including his club PSG who called off their end of season dinner in solidarity and respect for Rico.

After admission into the hospital, frequent updates on Rico’s condition stalled. Subsequent reports on his condition filtered in through his wife.

According to reports, the break in communication on Rico’s condition was at the instance of his family, who asked Virgen Del Rocio hospital, where Rico is treated, to cease disclosing information on Rico’s condition except major breakthroughs in the care process.

Now, it has been confirmed Sergio Rico is out of intensive care unit.

A hospital report on Sergio Rico’s condition on Wednesday revealed the Spanish footballer has been discharged from intensive care unit.

“Sergio Rico has been discharged from the ICU … where he was under close surveillance and monitoring during the five weeks he has been cared for by the Intensive Care team, along with other specialists,” the report read.

The report adds Sergio Rico has been moved to the medical and nursing unit where he will be attended to by another team of specialists.

“As of today, he has been admitted to the ward, where he will continue to receive medical and nursing care from another team of specialists at the hospital.”

Virgen Del Rocio’s report is coming at the back of a previous positive report from Rico’s wife, Alba Silva, who told Telecinco weeks ago his husband is making a speedy recovery.

Silva confirmed Sergio Rico was slowly getting himself back and has recovered partially from comatose with more improvements expected as he was yet to still recognize his close family members.

When asked whether Rico have gotten back to full consciousness due to the brain damage he sustained in the injury, Alba Silva said “it is step by step process.”

Sergio Rico’s fatal accident occured on May 28 with witnesses capturing the horrific scenes that led to the heavy head injury and brain damage. An eyewitness said Rico was kicked several times by the horse he rod on after he fell off from it.

He struggled to free himself in grueling pain before he was finally rescued and flown via an helicopter to the hospital.

Sergio Rico joined PSG on a loan move from Sevilla where he established his career, making 114 appearances for the La Liga club and winning the Europa League two times.

After an impressive loan spell with PSG, his loan move was made permanent on a four-year contract but the arrival of GlaluigI Donnarumma relegated him from the starting lineup.

He was again loaned to Mallorca in La Liga in 2022 where he breath life back into his career.

He has won two French Ligue 1 titles, Coup de la Ligue, Coup de France, and Trophes des Champions with PSG.
