5th placed Liverpool have written to Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL) requesting for elucidation after they were left discontented by two calls they felt led to their draw against Aston Villa.
There have been several occurrences in recent matches with referee’s during matches involving Liverpool and that has led to the club being infuriated over notable calls in both halves.
Tyrone Mings was yellow-carded by referee John Brooks for a chest-high challenge on Cody Gakpo.
That left the former PSV Eindhoven attacker feeling pained and it also resulted in his shirt being ripped due to the collision.
The Liverpool attacker was also left with stud marks on his torso in a frustrating encounter for Liverpool at Anfield.
The head of the Video Assistant Referee for the game Tony Harrington reviewed the incident for a potential red card.
However, John Brooks didn’t change his decision despite the fact that Gakpo had required a long treatment by the medics.
Many viewed the rash tackle from Tyrone Mings as a reckless and dangerous challenge which could have easily resulted in him being sent off.
Following the commencement of proceedings in the second half, Cody Gakpo felt he had brought Liverpool back into the game but his goal was disallowed by Tony Harrington.
Virgil Van Dijk who created the chance for Gakpo was adjudged to have been in an offside position when the ball got to his path off Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa.
The 31-year-old defender was bewildered by it all, stating: “I didn’t understand what was going on.
“I asked (fourth official) Michael Oliver on the side and apparently it was a question if the Villa player deliberately headed it back and I have no idea if he did, yes or no.
“I’ve no idea. I think it would be good if next season we can hear what they discuss, everyone around it, and be transparent.
“For them to explain with you guys, coming here, that’s what happened in Holland, why not over here?”
The Reds have been highly infuriated over several issues recently and they are now asking for an explanation from the head of PGMOL Howard Webb.
They intend to know how the decisions against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa were made by Tony Harrington.
Jurgen Klopp served his first match suspension during the game against Aston Villa and as such assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders deputized in his stead.
It begs to question what the reaction of Klopp would have been if he was in the technical area when both incidents occurred.
Liverpool occupy the 5th position on the Premier League table, 3 points away from 4th placed Manchester United with only a game left to play this campaign.
Their ambition of finishing in the top-four appears to be faint given the fact that Manchester United need only a point in their final two games of the season to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
