From Robert Lewandowski to the World Cup winning Argentine, Futballnews will take a look at the list of most goals scored in a season.

Ciro Immobile scoped the European Golden Shoe in the 2019-20 season and Lewandowski bagged the award the following year after he scored 41 goals when he was still at Bayern Munich.

The Poland international was epic that season and the 41 goals scored took him past Gerd Muller’s previous Bundesliga season record of 40 goals.

Lewandowski reached that feat in the 2020/21 season in Bayern Munich’s last match where Bayern won 5-2 against Augsburg.

The Premier League just saw Erling Haaland break the previous record of most goals scored in a season and the season is not over yet.

The Manchester City sensation has already scored 35 goals in the 2022/23 season with four matches left to play in this campaign.

Haaland will surely break more records in the Premier League, he is on 35 goals and he is not looking like he will stop soon.

With these in mind, let us take a look at players with most goals scored in a single season in Europe’s top 5 leagues:

Most goals in a La Liga season – Lionel Messi (50 goals) 2011/12

The 2011-12 La Liga season was arguably the best season for Lionel Messi on a personal note.

Despite Barcelona missing out on the League title and the UEFA Champions League, the then Barca attacker scored a whopping 73 goals that season, with 50 of them coming in the Spanish La Liga.

The record may not be broken so easily, as his Rival Cristiano Ronaldo came close in the same year, but he ended with 46 goals.

Most goals in a Ligue 1 season – Josip Skoblar (44 goals) 1970/71

Kylian Mbappe and Neymar may have dominated Ligue 1 in recent times but they have failed to break the record set by Skloblar.

Josip Skoblar dominated the goalscoring chart every single season between 1970-1973, ending up as the top scorer in the French League.

This record till date has not been broken as the former Marseille forward will always be remembered for reaching such feat.

Josip Skoblar remains Ligue 1 highest goalscorer.

The former Croatian forward set the record for most goals scored in a Ligue 1 season in 1970-71, when he found the net 44 times in just 36 games.

Statistically, he scored 1.22 goals per game and the closest to that record was Zlatan Ibrahimovic when he scored 38 goals for Paris Saint-Germain in the 2015/16 season.

Though Lionel Messi is in the French Lique one now, there is no certainty that he will meet that record.

Most goals in a Bundesliga season – Robert Lewandowski (41 goals) 2020/21

Robert Lewandowski set a new Bundesliga single-season goals record in 2020/21, after he scored 41 goals in the campaign to surpass Gerd Müller’s 49-year-old record of 40.

Gerd Müller set the record of 40 goals in the 1971/72 Bundesliga season and there were many who argued it would never be beaten.

Lewandowski in 2021/22 breaking Muller’s record.

Müller’s record stood for 4 decades before the Polish international broke the record in 2020/21.

Most goals in a Serie A season – Gonzalo Higuain in and Ciro Immobile (36 goals) in 2019/20

Ciro Immobile equaled former Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain’s goals tally of 36 goals in the 2019/20 Serie A season.

The Argentinian striker had scored 36 goals in the 2015/16 Serie A season and Immobile, scored 14 of his 36 goals from the penalty spot as Lazio finished within the Champions League spots in 2019/20.

That was the third time that Immobile had ended up being the top scorer in a Serie A season after 2013-2014 (22 goals) with Torino, and in 2017-2018 (29) with Lazio.

Most goals in a Premier League season – Erling Haaland (35 goals) 2022/23

The Premier League season goal record fell to Erling Haaland after he bagged his 35th goal of the season for Manchester City on Wednesday as they beat West Ham.

Mohamed Salah held the last record for most goals scored to his name but the Norwegian broke the record on Wednesday.

Also Andy Cole and Alan Shearer’s now-former record for goals in a 42-game season (34) has gone as the City striker can’t stop scoring.

It was quite clear ever since Haaland’s debut that the Premier League record books would be threatened with a significant re-write at some point.

The numbers get more and more astonishing every time he enters the field, which he will still do four more times before the season ends.

The question is, which player will outscore Lionel Messi in terms of number of league goals in a single season?
