Diogo Jota scored a late winner as Liverpool defeat Tottenham to retain Premier League top-four hopes
The two teams seem a bit far off the race for the top-four and the tie was a decider on who is going to cling on to the race for European football next season.
The Reds went into the game having lost just once in their last 20 encounters to Tottenham.
Since a 4-1 loss at Wembley Stadium, Liverpool have been unbeaten in their last 10 games against Spurs.
Starting lineup
Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, van Dijk, Robertson; Elliott, Fabinho, Jones; Salah, Gakpo, Diaz.
Tottenham: Forster; Romero, Dier, Davies; Porro, Skipp, Hojbjerg, Perisic; Kulusevski, Son; Kane.
Liverpool got the game to a fire start, dominating play and wielding absolute control.
Just three minutes into play, the Reds’ intense pressure yielded result.
Curtis Jones, left unmarked at the back post was quick to clip in Alexander-Arnold’s cross opening the scoring for the home side.
The Jurgen Klopp-led side continued in their electric start after the early lead.
It was a double for the Reds just five minutes into the game. Luiz Diaz doubled the lead in no distant time after the first goal.
Former PSV Eindhoven forward Gody Gakpo ghost behind Dier as Reds build up their attack in the right flank. He then suddenly cut in and set up Luiz Diaz who fired home Liverpool’s second.
Just five minutes into the game, Liverpool went two goals up and were dominating play and threatening for more goal.
Tottenham were totally overshadowed in the first nine minutes of the game as Liverpool pressed on with confidence.
Spurs’ plight worsened when they conceded a penalty in the 15th minute after Romero slid down Gody Gakpo in the box.
Mo Salah stepped up to take the penalty and sent it right through the middle while Forster dived to the right.
It was Liverpool 3-0 up against the visitors in just 15 minutes into the game.
Despite going three goals up, the home side were still in charge of proceedings going forward but Spurs were able to get one back late in the first half.
Reds had their own share of poor defending which saw Robertson charged down acres of space in the left area before crossing for Harry Kane who volleyed home to reduce the deficit.
The first half ended with Liverpool leading 3-1 as Spurs conceded more than two goals in the first half for three consecutive games.
Second Half Report
Liverpool continued to hold sway over the game as the second half kicked off.
It was another clinical performance by the homes side as they silenced Spurs with an overwhelming display.
Spurs made little effort to break Liverpool’s domineering display but were able to tame the Red’s goal-scoring instincts.
With over 70 minutes played, Liverpool failed to add to the goal tally and made no clear attempt on goal despite wielding swaths of possession.
Spurs equally failed to find the back of the net but were dangerous when charging forward.
Son Heung-Min scored in the 77th minute to draw Tottenham close to a comeback to make it 3-2.
Richarlison then hits Tottenham’s third goal in stoppage time to make it 3-3 but Reds still salvage a win after Diogo Jota scores a 95th-minute goal to make it 4-3.
Liverpool ran out 4-3 winners thanks to the late goal from Diogo Jota to retain their Premier League top-four hopes.
