The Red Devils were hit with a double injury blow in the Europa League quarterfinal clash against Sevilla at Old Trafford.

They lost two prolific center-backs to injury blow – an incident which gutted and exposed the team to defensive blunders.

The home side surrendered a first half two-goal lead with own goals from Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire.

After the first half Raphael Varane was subbed off due to his injury. In the 87th minute, Lisandro Martinez was also forced off the game after he also picked up an injury in a devastating blow to the Red Devils’ backline.

Varane and Martinez both injured in Sevilla game

Lisandro Martinez’s injury reduced Manchester United to 10 men after Erik Ten Hag had completed all his five substitutions in the game.

Few minutes after the Argentine World Cup winner was stretchered off the game, Harry Maguire level the scores for the away side after he mistakenly headed into his own net.

Erik Ten Hag described Manchester United’s injury as a mess that twisted the game and gave an upper hand to Sevilla.

There were concerns Lisandro Martinez has picked an Achilles problem due to how he was hurled off the pitch but Erik Ten Hag debunked claims of Achille problem.

The former Ajax boss ruled out Lisandro Martinez from Manchester United’s Premier League clash on Sunday but maintained the club was hoping for a positive outcome after a medical examination will be conducted.

The statement made available on the club’s official website revealed Raphael Varane will be ruled out for a number of games for the Red Devils for some weeks.

However, his actual return date has not been confirmed but there is an optimism he is more likely to return before the end of the season.

“Raphael Varane is expected to be out for a few weeks but is more likely to return to action before the end of the season,” the statement reads.

The club’s report on Lisandro Martinez is more gloomy with the Argentina international set to miss the rest of the season due to the injury blow.

The statement confirmed Lisandro Martinez has suffered a fracture in his metatarsal bone and will not return for action for the Red Devils till the end of the season.

The club’s statement reads;

“Lisandro Martinez has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his foot.”

After joining the club from Ajax for £56.7m, Lisandro Martinez has been instrumental in Erik Ten Hag’s mini-revival at Old Trafford.

He has made 45 appearances for the club in all competitions with one Premier League goal.

Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane’s injury blow may likely twist Manchester United fortunes this season.

The club is enroute to a treble and also eyeing a top-four finish in the Premier League.
