SC Freiburg shockingly knocked out favourites Bayern Munich 2-1 in their German Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday via goals from Nicolas Hofler and a second half stoppage time penalty from Lucas Hoeler.

In a surprising loss for the Munich based club which is Thomas Tuchel’s second match as head coach of the side, Hoeler nicely converted a last gasp penalty sending goalkeeper Yann Sommer the opposite direction.

Freiburg booked their place in the next round of the competition via that victory and there were electric scenes after full time at the Allianz Arena from individuals who have affiliations with the club.

Thomas Tuchel said after the game, “I am not really angry. We conceded two goals with two shots. I can’t remember another chance from Freiburg. The last pass, precision obviously, are all an issue. But still we had good moments we could have used, but just could not keep it up.

“In the end it is our fault. We are very disappointed to lose a quarterfinal at home. Of course I am responsible.”

The Bavarians fired the first salvo in the game in the 19th minute through a Dayot Upamecano’s header off a well delivered corner from Joshua Kimmich.

However, the game changed on its head as their opposition on the night continued to attack. A thunderous 20-metre rocket from Nicolas Hofler brought the game to parity after just 28 minutes.

Bayern Munich almost went ahead against Freiburg close to half-time

The side from Munich almost took the lead about the stroke of half-time but Thomas Muller’s attempt was cleared off the line by Matthias Ginter.

Bayern Munich’s fiery attack of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane couldn’t score for the club, although they had several efforts saved by Freiburg’s goalie Marken Flekken who was good on the night.
