As his name was announced in the Stadium, PSG fans blew whistles in an apparent protest of Lionel Messi’s underwhelming spell with PSG while Kylian Mbappe’s name was met with cheers.

Nevertheless, some fans beat the whistle to chant his name in support but it was clear some PSG fans are not comfortable with Lionel Messi’s performance at the club.

Recall PSG ultras booed Lionel Messi in a French Ligue 1 game against Rennes, protesting his over-bloated earnings.

PSG ultras felt Lionel Messi has fallen below expectations and has failed to justify the club’s outrageous spending on his weekly wages.

Lionel Messi joined PSG in 2021 after Barcelona could not keep him due to the club’s niggling financial struggles.

Anti-Messi sentiments has been growing among PSG fans

In his two seasons with the club, PSG have crashed out of the Champions League round 16 twice against Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Some PSG fans believe Messi has not done enough for the club after he failed to bring his Champions League success at Barcelona to PSG.

The anti-Messi sentiments that has been building up among some PSG fans recently was again relived in the game against Lyon.

PSG suffered a shock home defeat to the ninth-placed team after Bradley Barcola scored the match-winner for the visitors.

PSG went into the 2022 World Cup unbeaten in 22 matches but after the break, they have suffered seven defeats in their last 18 games in all competitions.

They are still top of the Ligue 1 table with six points after they loss against Lyon but it was another disappointing display for PSG and Lionel Messi.

Fans booed the players off the pitch after the game and Messi’s name was whistled off when it was announced.

Lionel Messi has a few months remaining in his PSG contract but he is yet to renew his deal with the club.

He has been linked to a summer exit from the Ligue 1 giants but his father and agent Jorge Messi have debunked the reports linking his son to PSG exit.

Recently, Barcelona have confirmed they have contacted Lionel Messi to have him return to Camp Nou after his PSG contract expires at the end of the season.

The World Cup winner may well be on his exit lane from the club as the ridicule from some sets of PSG fans shows no sign of abetting.

Messi has scored 29 goals in 67 appearances for PSG since joining the club in 2021.
