Tuchel was born in Krumbach, Germany. He retired from active football at age 25 after a chronic knee cartilage injury. In 2000, he began his coaching career as a youth coach at VfB Stuttgart.

His most recent job was with Chelsea FC in the English Premier League where he won the Champions League in his debut season.
